Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University is the First Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University and the First Clinical Medical College of Southern Medical University. It undertakes tasks such as clinical medical care, medical education, medical research, and preventive healthcare. It is a large-scale comprehensive tertiary hospital and a national regional medical center. The hospital was established in 1941, originally as the Rear Hospital of the Third Division of the New Fourth Army. In 1975, its designation was adjusted to the First Affiliated Hospital of the First Military Medical University of the People's Liberation Army, and with approval from the General Logistics Department, it was externally named "Nanfang Hospital." In 2004, following the transfer of the First Military Medical University to Guangdong Province, the hospital was renamed Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University. The hospital currently comprises the main campus and the Zengcheng campus. In collaboration with the Ganzhou Municipal People's Government of Jiangxi Province, it co-builds a national regional medical center based on Ganzhou People's Hospital (Nanfang Hospital Ganzhou Hospital of Southern Medical University). The hospital now serves as an output hospital for the construction of national regional medical centers, a jointly established national trauma regional medical center by the National Health Commission and the province, a unit for the National Capacity Improvement Project for Diagnosis and Treatment of Difficult and Critical Illnesses (Tumors), a national regional diagnosis and treatment center for traditional Chinese medicine (Rheumatology), a national emergency medical rescue base, a pilot project unit for the construction of a "Flagship" hospital for integrated Chinese and Western medicine, a project base for the Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Plan ("111 Plan"), one of the first key construction units of the Guangdong Provincial High-Level Hospital "Summit Plan," and houses the State Key Laboratory of Organ Failure Prevention and Treatment, the National Clinical Research Center for Chronic Kidney Disease, as well as the Guangdong Provincial Institute of Nephrology, the Guangdong Provincial Institute of Liver Diseases, the Guangdong Provincial Institute of Traumatic Orthopedics, and the Southern Institute of Gastroenterology. The hospital has 5 national key disciplines, 17 national clinical key specialties, and 4 national clinical key specialty construction projects (Neurology, Anesthesiology, Cardiology, and Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine). Clinical Medicine and Stomatology are first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points. It boasts 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 7 dual-appointed academicians, and over 60 national-level talents, including Changjiang Scholars, National Outstanding Youth Science Fund recipients, National Excellent Youth Science Fund recipients, and young and middle-aged innovation leaders from the Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2006, Academician Fanfan Hou's research results on the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease were published in the *New England Journal of Medicine* (NEJM), attracting significant attention from the international medical community and achieving a breakthrough as the first original article by a mainland Chinese scholar published in that journal. In 2019, Professor Guoxin Li's latest research results on laparoscopic minimally invasive gastric cancer treatment were published in the *Journal of the American Medical Association* (JAMA) and were incorporated into the U.S. NCCN guidelines. In 2022, Professor Huijie Zhang's clinical research results on dietary intervention in obese patients were published in the *New England Journal of Medicine* (NEJM), marking the first original clinical intervention research result from China's metabolic field published in that journal to date. In the 2023 public hospital performance monitoring, the hospital ranked in the A+ tier. It has previously received 10 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and 37 first prizes at the provincial and ministerial level. In 2024, the number of projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China ranked 12th nationally and 2nd in Guangdong Province. In recent years, on authoritative domestic hospital rankings, the hospital has consistently ranked among the top 15-20 comprehensive hospitals in China, with 10-15 specialties, including Nephrology, Infectious Diseases, Plastic Surgery, Hematology, Pathology, and Gastroenterology, entering the national top ten or receiving nominations. After eighty years of institutional accumulation and the arduous efforts of several generations, Nanfang Hospital has developed into a high-level research-oriented hospital with strong comprehensive strength, prominent disciplinary characteristics, advanced management levels, profound cultural heritage, and a high reputation and influence both nationally and internationally. In 1995, the Central Military Commission awarded the hospital's Huiqiao Medical Center the honorary title of "Model Medical Huiqiao Unit." Comrade Jiang Zemin personally inscribed the words: "Heal the wounded and rescue the dying, selflessly dedicate; work hard and persevere, forever maintain true character." The hospital has successively received honors or titles such as the Advanced Unit of the Whole Army for SARS Prevention and Control, the National Heroic Collective for Earthquake Relief, the National Advanced Collective for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, the National Advanced Grassroots Party Organization, the National Model Unit for Learning from Lei Feng, the National Civilized Unit, and the Outstanding Collective for Safe Hospital Construction.
