The Department of Respiratory Medicine at Nanfang Hospital was officially established in 1978. With strong support from the university and the hospital, and through the relentless efforts of all medical staff over more than three decades, the department has achieved outstanding results in clinical care, education, and research, and has developed into a well-established unit. As a key department of the hospital, it currently comprises six main sections: general wards, a respiratory intensive care unit (RICU), a ventilator management and treatment center, a respiratory endoscopy center, a pulmonary function testing room, and a chronic airway disease research laboratory. It has 68 general beds and 6 RICU beds. The department director and academic leader, Professor Cai Shaoxi, is a doctoral supervisor, one of the first experts in Guangdong Province's "Famous Doctor Project," and a review expert for the National 863 Science and Technology Plan and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He currently serves as a member of the Respiratory Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Vice Chairman of the Respiratory Disease Society of the Guangdong Medical Association, Standing Committee Member and Secretary-General of the Respiratory Physician Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Vice Chairman of the Guangdong Respiratory Physician Association, member of the Hospital Infection Control Committee of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, and Vice Chairman of the Hospital Infection Control Professional Committee of the Guangdong Preventive Medicine Association. The department has 9 senior professional titles, including 2 doctoral supervisors and 6 master's supervisors, along with 1 postdoctoral fellow and 9 doctoral degree holders. Many staff members serve as editorial board members or special reviewers for national-level journals such as the *Journal of Southern Medical University (formerly Journal of First Military Medical University)*, *International Journal of Respiratory Medicine*, *Chinese Journal of Practical Internal Medicine*, *Journal of Practical Medicine*, *Chinese Journal of Asthma*, *Chinese Journal of Clinical Medicine (Chinese Edition)*, *Chinese Journal of Clinical Medicine (English Edition)*, and *Chinese Journal of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases*. As a doctoral degree authorization point in internal medicine and a master's degree authorization point in respiratory medicine, the department undertakes one national and one provincial continuing education project each, has trained over 50 doctoral and master's students, and more than 200 trainees in specialized programs. Since 2000, it has published over 200 papers in core medical journals, holds 6 national utility model patents, and has led or undertaken 9 National Natural Science Foundation projects, as well as over 10 research funds from the Chinese Medical Association, Guangdong Province, the military, and Guangzhou City. The department's participation in the *Guangdong Province Infectious Atypical Pneumonia (SARS) Prevention and Treatment Research* won the Special Prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award. It has also received one second prize and two third prizes in the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards, one second prize and four third prizes in the Military Medical Achievement Awards, three third prizes in the Military Science and Technology Progress Awards, and one third prize in the Guangzhou Science and Technology Progress Award. The department has published over 10 monographs, including 4 as editor-in-chief or deputy editor-in-chief, and 3 teaching multimedia products, two of which won national and military third prizes for outstanding educational audio-visual products. As an "Advanced Grassroots Party Organization" of the General Logistics Department, the department distinguished itself during the 2003 SARS outbreak and was awarded the title of "Model Collective in Combating SARS" by Guangzhou City, "Advanced Unit in SARS Prevention and Control" by the Four General Departments of the People's Liberation Army, and "Model Unit in SARS Prevention and Control" by the First Military Medical University, with a third-class merit. As a National Clinical Pharmacology Base and a training center for pulmonary function, flexible bronchoscopy, and ventilator use, the department is equipped with: a Jaeger oscillatory lung function tester, a 6200 body plethysmograph, an OLYMPUS medical thoracoscope and electronic bronchoscope, a PENTEX electronic bronchoscope; over 20 ventilators including Swiss Galileo and Raphael, American PB-840, German Siemens Servo i, German Drager Evita 4, American Respironics non-invasive ventilators, and Australian RESMED non-invasive ventilators; more than 10 sets of multi-functional monitoring equipment, and a portable exhaled nitric oxide detection system (NIOX-MINO, Sweden), with total equipment value exceeding 10 million RMB. Through over three decades of effort, the department's medical and research capabilities have reached advanced domestic levels. It has participated in multiple global multicenter clinical studies, such as the "Inhaled Steroid Treatment As Regular Therapy In Early Asthma" multicenter study as a sub-center, and has been involved in the National "Tenth Five-Year Plan" key project *Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulmonary Embolism* and the National "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" Science and Technology Support Program project *Improving the Diagnosis and Treatment Level of Pulmonary Embolism* as a sub-center. In recent years, the department has developed mature diagnostic and treatment protocols for common and frequently occurring diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary infections, benign and malignant lung tumors, and various acute and chronic respiratory failures. It also has extensive clinical experience in rare and difficult diseases, including pulmonary embolism, idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, deep fungal infections, pulmonary aspergillosis, cytomegalovirus pneumonia, *Pneumocystis carinii* pneumonia, histoplasmosis pneumonia, allergic alveolitis, and pulmonary vasculitis, particularly in managing pulmonary infections following organ transplantation. The department has become a comprehensive medical research center integrating clinical care, research, and education, with a well-structured talent hierarchy, and possesses the capability to compete internationally in the field of respiratory medicine.
