The Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Internal Medicine at Nanfang Hospital is a nationally recognized model unit for TCM work in comprehensive hospitals commended by the Ministry of Health, a key discipline of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM) in TCM Encephalopathy and TCM Nephropathy, and a key specialty in TCM Chronic Headache and Rheumatic Diseases. It is also a key discipline of Guangdong Province's higher education institutions (Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Clinical Discipline). In 2007, it was rated as a key clinical discipline of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine by the Ministry of Education. It is one of the constituent institutions for clinical research of new TCM drugs under the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) and a member unit of the SATCM TCM Encephalopathy Emergency Collaboration Group. It serves as a doctoral and master's degree authorization point and a postdoctoral research station for the first-level discipline of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine. The TCM Department possesses strong technical expertise, with a dynamic team of experts including 7 full professors and chief physicians, 3 associate professors and deputy chief physicians, 1 lecturer and attending physician, 4 teaching assistants and physicians, and over 40 postdoctoral, doctoral, and master's students. It has hosted numerous major international and domestic academic conferences. The TCM Department has 50 beds, primarily treating conditions such as encephalopathy, nephropathy, rheumatic diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, and advanced-stage tumors. It employs a comprehensive integrated therapy approach combining TCM and Western medicine theories and methods, modern disease differentiation with TCM syndrome differentiation, pharmacotherapy with psychotherapy, TCM herbal treatment with acupuncture, and internal administration with external application. Centered on improving clinical efficacy, it rationally and systematically applies various effective treatments and approaches to individual patients and specific diseases, achieving favorable outcomes. The department treats over 1,000 inpatients and more than 50,000 outpatients annually. It has a significant influence in Guangdong, the Central and Southern regions, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia, achieving zero complaints for five consecutive years and receiving commendation from the hospital. Department experts have undertaken 1 National 863 Project, 6 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 3 key provincial and military projects, and nearly 50 general projects. They have published over 60 monographs and more than 500 research papers. They have developed new drugs such as Zhengtian Wan, Zhengtian Capsules, Jixiekang, and Zhenrong Bugu Granules. They have received 4 second-class and over 20 third-class awards for scientific and technological progress from Guangdong Province and the military, as well as 1 collective third-class merit. The TCM Department has formed distinct technical advantages and professional characteristics in the following three major areas: 1. Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine for Encephalopathy: A key discipline of the SATCM, a core discipline of the first-level doctoral authorization point in Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, one of the research directions of the NMPA drug clinical research institution (TCM Encephalopathy), and a member unit of the SATCM TCM Encephalopathy Emergency Collaboration Group. Discipline Characteristics: Proposes the pathogenesis characteristics of chronic headache as involving multiple stasis, wind, dampness, and deficiency, developing a series of new drugs such as Zhengtian Wan and New Zhengtian Wan (Zhengtian Capsules) for migraine treatment. Proposes the pathogenesis of epilepsy as yang rising and wind moving, treating it from the liver perspective using Chaihu Shugan Tang for antiepileptic effects. Discipline Leader: Professor Chen Baotian, doctoral supervisor, healthcare physician for the Central Military Commission, consultant to the National TCM Encephalopathy Professional Committee, chair of the Military TCM Internal Medicine Professional Committee, and chair of the Guangdong Provincial Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Pain Professional Committee. 2. Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine for Nephropathy: A key discipline of the SATCM, a key clinical discipline of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine under the Ministry of Education, a key clinical discipline of Guangdong Province's Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, a core discipline of the first-level doctoral authorization point in Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, and one of the constituent institutions for clinical research of new TCM drugs under the NMPA. Discipline Characteristics: Proposes the pathogenesis theory of nephropathy involving multiple deficiency, stagnation, and stasis, advocating treatment from the liver perspective. Utilizes Xiao Si Wu Tang as the main formula combined with dual, triple, or quadruple combination therapies integrating TCM and Western medicine for effective nephropathy treatment. Proposes a new diagnostic and grading classification scheme for kidney deficiency syndrome.
