The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Nanfang Hospital was established as an independent department in 1983. In 1999, it was approved by the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Commission to establish the Diabetes Prevention and Treatment Research Center. In 2012, it was rated as a Key Specialty of Guangdong Province. It serves as a postdoctoral research station for endocrinology and metabolism under the National Education Commission, a master's and doctoral degree-granting unit, and holds positions such as a member of the Chinese Diabetes Society, deputy leader of the Diabetic Foot and Peripheral Vascular Disease Group, standing committee member of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association's Endocrinology and Metabolism Physician Branch, standing committee member of the Chinese Microcirculation Society's Diabetes and Microcirculation Professional Committee and leader of the Diabetic Foot Disease Group, as well as the chair unit of the Guangdong Medical Doctor Association's Endocrinology Physician Branch and the Guangdong Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Wound Management Professional Committee. It has been rated as an Advanced Department of Nanfang Hospital for over a decade. The department covers an area of 1,500 square meters, currently has 73 inpatient beds, and employs 19 specialist physicians, including 3 professors, 7 associate professors, 2 visiting professors, and approximately 50 medical and nursing staff at all levels. With distinctive clinical medical techniques and basic research features, it has become a well-known modern medical research institution in China, integrating the prevention, treatment, research, and talent cultivation of endocrine and metabolic diseases. The laboratory is equipped with advanced instruments capable of detecting various endocrine hormones, physiologically active substances, and other relevant functional indicators, meeting both clinical and research needs. The department is equipped with diabetic foot screening devices, fundus cameras, nerve conduction velocity measurement instruments, plantar pressure/gait analyzers, 45 insulin pumps, and 6 continuous glucose monitors, making it one of the larger endocrinology and metabolism specialties in Guangdong Province. Its subspecialties feature distinct medical characteristics, including diabetic foot disease, diabetic nephropathy, adrenal disorders, hyperthyroid exophthalmos, obesity, sexual development and gonadal dysfunction, hypothalamic-pituitary diseases, pregnancy-related endocrine and metabolic diseases, and metabolic bone diseases. Among these, "diabetic foot and chronic diabetic wound repair," "diagnosis and treatment of malignant hyperthyroid exophthalmos," and "patient education for diabetes" are leading in the province. Over the past 30 years, the department has developed into a major diabetic foot prevention and treatment center in South China, hosting numerous large-scale domestic and regional academic conferences, with the annual "Southern Diabetic Foot Forum" becoming a recognized brand. In September 2017, it led the establishment of the Diabetic Foot Specialty Alliance, attracting over 150 hospitals at various levels from South China. As an outstanding teaching unit of Nanfang Hospital, the department undertakes multi-level teaching tasks. Each spring and autumn, it recruits over 10 visiting physicians from across the country. For several consecutive years, it has successfully organized national and provincial continuing education programs, training nearly 3,000 participants from all over the country. To date, it has trained over 100 master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral students. Since 2008, it has established close academic ties with Harvard Medical School in the United States, jointly training doctoral students. Four physicians from the department have conducted postdoctoral research at the Joslin Diabetes Center of Harvard Medical School. The department has received over 30 national and provincial research grants, currently undertaking 4 National Natural Science Foundation projects. It has won 6 provincial-level or higher science and technology advancement awards, 3 teaching achievement awards, edited 8 monographs, contributed to over 20 books, and published more than 300 research papers, including over 20 SCI-indexed papers.
