The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, founded in 1903, is a large-scale tertiary Grade A hospital. It serves as the host hospital for the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health, the National Center for Respiratory Medicine, the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases, the Clinical Base of the Guangzhou Laboratory, and the State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Diseases. In 2018, it was selected as one of the first units of Guangdong Province's "Summit Plan" and the National "Capacity Improvement Project for Diagnosis and Treatment of Difficult and Critical Diseases." In 2020, it became the main construction unit of the National Center for Respiratory Medicine, undertaking emergency medical rescue missions for public health emergencies at the provincial, municipal, and national levels. Notably, it made significant contributions to national and societal efforts during emergencies such as the SARS outbreak, avian influenza, and the COVID-19 pandemic, earning widespread trust among the public and recognition both domestically and internationally. In 2020, the hospital's leading figure, Academician Zhong Nanshan, was awarded the "Medal of the Republic." Currently, the hospital has entered a phase of high-quality development, forming a new development pattern of "one hospital with multiple branches and three centers," including the Yanjiang Campus (Yuexiu District), Datan Sha Campus (Liwan District), Haiyin Campus (Haizhu District), Huadiwan Campus (Liwan District), Hengqin Hospital (National Regional Medical Center), Loudi Hospital (National Regional Medical Center), and Anshun Hospital (Provincial Regional Medical Center). It also has 12 national key clinical specialties: Respiratory Medicine, Thoracic Surgery, Critical Care Medicine, Urology, Allergy, Oncology, Otolaryngology, Organ Transplantation, Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Neurology, Medical Imaging, and Clinical Laboratory. The hospital emphasizes education in both medical professional skills and medical humanities skills. It primarily hosts the undergraduate teaching of Nanshan College and the First Department of Clinical Medicine. The clinical medicine program is a national first-class undergraduate program construction site and a national characteristic program construction site. It has 24 teaching and research offices, including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics, as well as 24 standardized residency training bases, undertaking multi-level talent training such as undergraduate, master's, doctoral, postdoctoral, adult education, and standardized residency training. Clinical medicine is a first-level doctoral and master's degree program, a national characteristic program, and a national first-class construction program. The hospital has founded several professional journals. Since 2007, it has hosted the Chinese Journal of Joint Surgery (Electronic Edition). In 2009, it launched the first medical SCI journal in Guangdong Province, the *Journal of Thoracic Disease*, which was indexed by PubMed in 2011 and by SCI in 2013. It also founded the *Annals of Translational Medicine*, which was indexed by PubMed in September 2014 and by SCI in 2018. Adhering to the mission of "wholeheartedly serving the people's health," the hospital continuously optimizes service processes and actively expands various forms of convenient measures, such as appointment registration and specialized outpatient services. By strengthening refined hospital management, it persistently improves the level and quality of medical services. The hospital also vigorously carries out assistance work, having signed support and assistance agreements with over 100 grassroots hospitals in Guangdong Province, conducted multiple巡回医疗 activities in regions such as Tibet, and actively participated in overseas medical aid missions. During the "Anti-SARS" struggle in 2003, the medical staff of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, led by Academician Zhong Nanshan, proactively undertook the rescue of the majority of the most critically ill SARS patients in Guangdong Province, making significant contributions and receiving high praise from the World Health Organization.
