Department Details
The Department of Radiology is a comprehensive department integrating radiological examination, diagnosis, treatment, scientific research, and teaching. It primarily comprises four specialties: general radiology, CT, MRI, and interventional radiology. The Medical Imaging Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University is a key specialty in Guangdong Province, with the Radiology Department serving as one of its subspecialties and also as a training base for imaging medicine specialists. The department currently has 65 medical and technical staff, including 22 physicians (3 professors/chief physicians; 1 chief physician, 12 deputy chief physicians, with the remainder being attending physicians; 8 hold doctoral degrees, and 6 hold master's degrees), 26 technicians (including 1 chief technician, 2 deputy chief technicians, and 6 supervising technicians), 1 engineer, and 9 nurses (2 with senior professional titles), forming a well-structured talent echelon.
The department is equipped with large-scale imaging diagnostic devices, including: a 128-slice multi-slice spiral CT, a 16-slice multi-slice spiral CT, a 3T ultra-high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, a 1.5T MRI system, a digital subtraction angiography system, a fully digital gastrointestinal radiography system, a flat-panel mammography system, as well as a computed radiography (CR) system, a direct digital radiography (DR) system, a mobile direct digital radiography system, and a multifunctional X-ray machine. Through complete computerization, it has evolved into a modern medical imaging center, with each subspecialty equipped with advanced imaging devices in the industry. The PACS system of the Medical Imaging Department is seamlessly integrated with the hospital's HIS system. In 2004, the Radiology Department established an interventional operating room to perform interventional procedures for neurological, cardiovascular, and peripheral conditions.
The Radiology Department frequently conducts consultation discussions with other imaging subspecialties and clinical disciplines, participating in hospital-wide discussions on complex respiratory cases chaired by Academician Zhong Nanshan, as well as consultations on difficult cases in departments such as Thoracic Surgery, Respiratory Medicine, and Orthopedics. It also participates in consultation and treatment work for hemoptysis, renal hemorrhage, obstetric and gynecological hemorrhage, and pulmonary embolism in multiple hospitals within and outside the province.
During the fight against SARS in 2003, the Radiology Department was honored with the titles "Guangdong Province Advanced Unit in Combating SARS" and "Guangzhou City Model Unit in Combating SARS." Twenty-four individuals, including Zeng Qingsi and Song Yuquan, received the "Guangzhou City Third-Class Merit in Combating SARS" award.
【Teaching Work】
The Diagnostic Radiology Teaching and Research Office has been responsible for the teaching of imaging specialties since 1985 and is currently a Guangzhou City quality course. It undertakes undergraduate teaching in medical imaging, clinical medicine, anesthesiology, and full English teaching of medical imaging for the Nanshan Class and international student class. The teaching team is primarily composed of young and middle-aged teaching骨干, forming a professional technical team guided by senior experts and led by young and middle-aged experts, with a well-structured talent echelon.
The Radiology Department has consistently conducted standardized training for all department members to comprehensively enhance the clinical diagnostic, research, and teaching capabilities of young physicians. The diagnostic group holds training sessions every two weeks and conducts morning film-reading conferences daily. Since 2013, English film-reading activities have been initiated. In addition to holding film-reading activities twice a week, the technical group also engages in targeted rotations on large-scale equipment such as CT, MR, and DSA, combining learning with work.
【Research Work】
The Radiology Department has always placed great emphasis on scientific research. Under the leadership of early directors including Director Zhou Xiaozhen, Director Xie Nianwei, Director Cai Zhaoda, and Director Su Su, the department's research work has been carried out in an orderly and progressive manner. In 1999, the "Series Study on Imaging Diagnosis of Large Airway Tuberculosis," jointly researched by Cai Zhaoda and Zeng Qingsi, won the "Guangzhou City Science and Technology Progress Third Prize." During the SARS period, through the joint efforts of the department's directors, a series of articles on SARS were first published in key domestic core journals. Director Zeng Qingsi also received the Guangdong Province Science and Technology Achievement Second Prize.
In recent years, the main clinical research projects undertaken by the Radiology Department include: Study on the Correlation between Systemic-Pulmonary Shunts and Pulmonary Hypertension in Chronic Lung Disease and Interventional Shunt Blockage; Study on the Correlation between MR Diffusion, BOLD-fMRI, and Pathology in Diabetic Nephropathy; Study on MR Functional Imaging of Peripheral Nerve Injury; Study on the Correlation between Radiation Dose and Image Quality (Noise) in Digital Radiography; and Development of a Digital Radiography Simulation Teaching System. In addition, the department has vigorously developed research on interventional treatment for bronchial hemoptysis and renal hemorrhage, diagnosis and efficacy evaluation of bone and joint trauma, and CT diagnosis and research of the respiratory system. It currently undertakes or participates in multiple national, provincial, and ministerial-level research projects, including 2 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (General Program) and over 10 research projects at the provincial and ministerial level or above. The department publishes more than 20 academic papers at the provincial level or above annually and 10 SCI papers. It has received 1 Guangdong Province Science and Technology Achievement Second Prize and has authored or co-authored multiple monographs.
The Radiology Department has consecutively hosted the National Continuing Education Training Course for 16 years: the Respiratory Imaging Diagnosis Improvement Course, inviting many renowned domestic imaging experts for exchange and teaching.
