The predecessor of the Department of Rheumatology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University was a specialized group affiliated with the Department of Cardiology. With the rapid development of this group, the Department of Rheumatology was officially established in 2010. After more than a decade of effort, the Department of Rheumatology has formed a highly competent team dedicated to clinical practice, education, and research. This has addressed the previous absence of a rheumatology department in our hospital and gradually gained recognition within the field. Currently, the department has 10 beds and an 18-member medical and nursing team with an average age of 35, including 2 senior professional titles, 11 intermediate titles, 1 doctoral degree holder, 3 master's degree holders, and 12 bachelor's degree holders. The team demonstrates strong service capabilities and excellent medical ethics. In the 10 years since its establishment, the department has achieved zero doctor-patient disputes and has gradually developed into a specialized unit with sub-specialties in rheumatic disease-associated interstitial lung disease, rheumatic disease-associated pulmonary vascular disease, rheumatology rehabilitation, and chronic disease management. In terms of scientific education and research, the Department of Rheumatology actively undertakes various teaching activities at the school and hospital levels, including theoretical lectures, clinical clerkships, internships, standardized training, curriculum reforms for the Nanshan Class, and training for visiting physicians. Core teaching staff participate in competitions such as teaching and ward rounds, and have repeatedly received awards for outstanding teaching. The department has organized numerous annual conferences and training courses, dedicated to advancing the development of rheumatology in Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City, receiving widespread acclaim. Actively responding to the national medical alliance requirements, the department has established collaborations with areas such as Panyu and has participated in multiple public welfare activities, including poverty alleviation and medical support to Tibet. In 2019, the department passed the evaluation of the National Clinical Drug Trial Base, obtaining clinical trial qualifications, and has conducted multiple clinical drug trials. Additionally, it has led and participated in various research projects, publishing numerous papers in domestic and international journals.
