Insurance & Claims

It depends on the type of insurance:

  • Travel insurance / basic medical insurance: Most TCM wellness and conditioning treatments are not reimbursable; only treatments deemed medically necessary by a doctor (such as acupuncture for injury rehabilitation) may be covered at a lower ratio by a small number of plans.
  • High-end medical insurance: Some plans include TCM coverage with an annual reimbursement limit, covering treatments such as acupuncture and tuina.
  • TCM conditioning, weight loss and beauty treatments: All are paid out of pocket and cannot be reimbursed.

If your insurance includes TCM coverage, you can inform DOVECURE. We will prioritize connecting you with medical institutions that can issue claim documentation to facilitate your subsequent reimbursement process.

"Pre-existing condition" refers to the disease or health problem you already had before purchasing the insurance. The vast majority of medical insurance plans (including high-end medical insurance and travel insurance) do not cover pre-existing conditions, except for special high-end products that specifically include pre-existing condition coverage (with much higher premiums).

Therefore, if you travel to China specifically to treat your chronic disease, the expenses are most likely not reimbursable by insurance and you need to pay out of pocket.

If you are not sure whether your condition counts as a pre-existing condition and is eligible for reimbursement, you can share your insurance policy terms and medical history with DOVECURE, and we will help you make a preliminary assessment.

Most travel medical insurance plans cover emergency expenses that fall into the category of "sudden, acute, and non-pre-existing conditions".

The required documents include:

  • emergency medical record (original Chinese copy + subsequent translated version);
  • emergency medical invoice/receipt; detailed expense list;
  • test reports (blood test, CT, X-ray, etc.);
  • diagnosis certificate issued by the doctor.

It is recommended to sort out all the documents on the day of emergency treatment and do not lose them.If you are not sure which documents to keep and how to organize them, you can send photos to DOVECURE's consultants, and we will tell you which materials are necessary for the claim.

It is still worthwhile, you just use it differently. You can choose the International / VIP Department of public hospitals, where most premium insurances support direct billing. These departments share the same expert doctors as general departments, with better service and fewer crowds. If you must receive treatment in the general department, you can pay upfront first, then file a claim after returning home. All eligible expenses within the policy scope will still be reimbursed.

Tip: If you are unsure which option is more cost-effective, send us your insurance policy, and DOVECURE will calculate the best solution for you.

A: It is not 100% free, depending on your insurance policy.

If your insurance covers 100% of all selected treatments within the policy scope, you barely need to pay anything, just sign the form.

If there is a deductible, co-payment ratio, or uncovered items, you pay these parts on site, and the rest is settled directly between the hospital and the insurer.

DOVECURE's patient coordinator will confirm your coverage and direct-billing rules in advance, clarifying reimbursable and self-paid items to avoid awkwardness at checkout.

A: Pre‑authorization is generally required for costly treatment, hospitalization and surgery, including high‑priced services such as PET‑CT. Without it, insurers may deny or partially cover claims. Required documents include insured info, preliminary diagnosis, estimated treatment, cost and hospital details. DOVECURE Medical Concierge can handle it for you: we prepare bilingual documents, submit to the insurer and follow‑up to secure pre‑authorization before your visit.

Payment

Some special medications, imported drugs, and processed Chinese herbal pieces are not kept in stock at hospitals, so doctors may recommend purchasing them from designated external pharmacies. This is very common and there is no need to worry. However, it cannot be ruled out that a small number of pharmacies may charge higher prices or recommend expensive alternative medications. If you encounter this situation, you can contact DOVECURE's patient accompaniment coordinator: we are familiar with all regular pharmacies around major hospitals, and can help you compare prices and verify authenticity, ensuring you get genuine, properly-priced medications and avoid being overcharged.

Currently, China does not have a nationwide "departure tax refund for medical expenses" policy, and medical costs are not included in the scope of departure tax refunds for shopping purchases. A small number of designated medical institutions in certain free trade zones and special regions may have pilot policies, but these are very rare.

If this is an important consideration for you, you can inform DOVECURE of your situation before departure. We will check the latest local policies for you to see if there are any eligible benefits you can enjoy.

What if I lose my medical invoice/expense list? Can I get a reissued copy? A: The original official invoice (payment receipt) from public hospitals generally cannot be reissued. But you can apply for a "payment certificate" or get a photocopy of the invoice stub with the official hospital seal, which has almost the same legal validity as the original document and is accepted by most insurance companies.

To get the reissued certificate, you need to bring your ID documents and submit an application at the hospital's payment/finance window. The process is quite complicated and requires visiting multiple departments.

If you are a DOVECURE client, just share the basic information with us, and we can handle the whole process for you, no extra hassle on your part.

Yes.

Hospitals in China do not require the patient to make the payment in person. Anyone can settle the bill, as long as you provide the correct patient's full name and inpatient/outpatient number.

If you cannot be present in person, you can also authorize DOVECURE to make the payment on your behalf: you transfer the funds to DOVECURE, our patient coordinator will go to the hospital to complete the payment, and send you photos of the payment receipt. The whole process is fully transparent and traceable, which is very suitable for overseas children who need to pay medical bills for their parents staying in China or receiving medical treatment in China.

 You are welcome to bring this up. Chinese doctors normally recommend the most effective and reliable treatment by default. If you have a limited budget, inform your doctor. They can adjust to more cost‑effective options while maintaining treatment outcomes, such as switching to domestic‑produced medicines or cutting non‑essential tests.

 If you feel uncomfortable raising the topic or worry about miscommunication, our concierge staff can relay your budget requirements. DOVECURE will work with your doctor to design an effective plan fitting your budget and avoid unnecessary high‑cost expenses.

Discharge settlement follows the principle of “refund surpluses and collect shortfalls”.

  • If you paid by card or QR‑code scan, the leftover amount will be returned to your original payment account, usually within 1‑7 working days.
  • Cash deposits will be refunded in cash. Long queues are common at discharge counters during peak hours (9:00‑11:00 a.m.), and waits of one to two hours are normal.

With a DOVECURE Medical Concierge attendant, we can pre‑schedule settlement and handle all formalities on your behalf. You only need to pack and wait in your ward instead of queuing.

For stays in Chinese public hospitals, you will be notified to top‑up your deposit once it runs low. Failure to replenish it may affect your medication and treatment. Unlike many other countries, treatment is generally not provided before billing.

 DOVECURE Medical Concierge clients may apply for emergency support when facing temporary deposit shortages. At some partner hospitals, we can negotiate deferred‑payment arrangements under our service agreement. We also offer small‑sum emergency advances to keep your treatment ongoing. Repayment can be made later so your medical condition will not be compromised due to funding issues.

China Entry & Visa Services

No Chinese ID? No problem. Your original valid passport is all you need to register and set up a medical file at any public or qualified private hospital in China. Many international-friendly hospitals even let you do this directly on passport-enabled self-service kiosks.

As a foreign national seeking medical treatment in China, you can use the following methods to quickly travel from the airport to your pre-booked hospital, all fully adapted to your medical travel needs:

‌Book a private airport transfer in advance‌: You can reserve an exclusive bilingual driver in advance through the DOVECURE medical escort platform. No queuing is required after landing, and you can head to the hospital directly via the dedicated passage with zero language barriers, which is the most hassle-free travel option for medical visits.

‌Use the official airport taxi lane‌: After arrival, follow the signs to the official regular taxi waiting area, show the pre-prepared Chinese-English bilingual paper or digital document with the hospital's name and address, and tell the driver your destination directly. Taxis at core airports in first-tier cities operate under standardized management, which can take you to the destination quickly.

‌Take the airport rail transit‌: Most large airports in China are connected to the city's metro lines. You can download a map navigation APP that supports overseas payment on your phone in advance, enter the hospital name to select the metro route, avoid ground traffic congestion and arrive at the hospital on schedule.

‌Reserve a ride-hailing service in advance‌: Ask your escort staff to help you register an account on China's mainstream ride-hailing platforms that support overseas payment in advance. You can call a ride right after getting off the plane, the vehicle will wait for you at the designated pick-up point, and the trip cost is transparent and traceable.

You can directly consult the Chinese embassy or consulate abroad for the latest medical visa application material list. Preparing the pre-visit confirmation letter from the hospital in advance can greatly increase the approval rate. Dovetour Medical Concierge provides full-process visa material pre-review and appointment guidance services, helping you sort out all application documents and greatly improve visa processing efficiency.

It is permitted. You can apply for a stay document at the local public security organ's exit and entry administration authority, with the hospital-issued treatment certificate, within 7 days prior to the expiry of your current visa's stay period.

We suggest you provide an honest statement of your purpose. Preparing the hospital's pre-visit confirmation letter and wellness experience reservation documents in advance will make your entry inspection process far more efficient.

It is not required. With the relevant Canton Fair participation certificates, overseas merchants can get normal medical treatment in China during the validity of their business visa, no separate medical visa is needed, and Dovetour Medical Concierge can help with visa material pre-review and entry guidance.

Yes, overseas visitors can enter China directly on a tourist or business visa for short-term regular medical treatment and TCM wellness experiences. For long-term inpatient care, a dedicated medical visa can be applied for with a pre-arranged hospital invitation letter.

No. Once you renounce Chinese nationality, you will no longer be eligible for the reimbursement benefits under China's basic medical insurance system. The national medical insurance program is primarily designed for Chinese citizens and eligible foreign nationals, on the premise of normal participation and premium payment. If you still maintain your Chinese household registration (even if you have resided overseas for years), you are still qualified to enroll in the resident medical insurance scheme or the flexible-employment employee medical insurance scheme. Overseas Chinese who have obtained foreign nationality will need to cover all medical expenses fully at their own cost or rely on international commercial insurance when seeking medical treatment back in China. It is recommended to confirm in advance whether your international medical insurance covers Chinese mainland and the corresponding claim settlement procedures.

Yes. Even if the hospital accepts international bank cards or the insurance covers part of the expenses, the applicant still needs to prove that they have sufficient payment capacity. It is usually required to provide a bank statement showing a balance of at least ‌10,000 US dollars‌. Some consulates or hospitals may suggest preparing funds equivalent to 120% of the estimated treatment cost as the financial proof.

Yes. The 240-hour (10-day) transit visa exemption applies to foreign nationals who hold a connecting air ticket to a third country or region. If the patient only needs a short-term consultation, preliminary medical assessment or minor treatment, the transit visa exemption policy can be utilized. However, it should be noted that the transit visa exemption is not a substitute for a dedicated medical visa, and it does not apply to major diseases that require hospitalization or systematic treatment. The relevant document preparation for medical treatment under the transit visa exemption and full-process in-hospital coordination can be completed in one stop through Dovecure China Medical Escort Platform, which covers all supporting services for short-term medical visits in China.

The S1 visa applies to patients who need to receive long-term medical treatment in China for more than 180 days, covering scenarios such as chronic disease management, organ transplantation, long-term cancer treatment and other related conditions. To apply for the S1 visa, you are required to submit a critical illness notice or long-term treatment certificate issued by a Class-A tertiary hospital in China. After entry, you must complete the residence permit conversion within 30 days. The maximum validity period of this residence permit can reach 5 years, and failure to submit the application within the time limit will result in a fine. The S1 visa permits accompanying family members to travel together, including spouses, parents, children under the age of 18, and parents of the spouse. The relevant visa document preparation and post-entry formalities can be completed in one stop through Dovecure China Medical Escort Platform, which also covers all supporting services for the entire medical visit journey in China.

The S2 visa allows a maximum single stay of 180 days. You can apply for an extension within Chinese mainland with supporting documents issued by the hospital, and the total cumulative length of stay shall not exceed 180 days. S2 visa holders cannot directly convert to a long-term residence permit; if your treatment duration exceeds 180 days, you need to leave China and re-apply for an S1 visa. The S2 visa permits accompanying family members including spouses, children, parents, grandparents and siblings to travel together.

The L tourist visa is designed for sightseeing or short-term visits, and in principle it is not suitable for hospitalization or systematic medical care. While some simple elective procedures (such as joint replacement, cataract surgery, dental implant placement, etc.) can technically be done on a tourist visa, the S2 visa is specifically established for medical purposes. The key difference between the two is that the S2 visa will be marked with the word "treatment" in its visa remarks, which offers greater legal flexibility if the treatment duration needs to be extended; in contrast, the tourist visa is much harder to extend, and extensions are usually only approved for emergency situations. For any treatment that involves hospitalization or a long period of rehabilitation, the S2 visa is the safer and legally compliant choice.

The invitation letter is the most critical and time-consuming document in the S2 visa application process. Patients need to first contact the International Medical Department or International Patient Center of their target hospital (usually a Class A tertiary hospital in China). After reviewing the patient's medical records and confirming the feasibility of the treatment plan, the hospital will issue an official bilingual (Chinese-English) invitation letter, which includes the patient's full name, diagnosis, treatment plan, intended duration of stay, and the official hospital seal. It is recommended that patients initiate contact with the hospital 4 to 8 weeks before their planned departure. Currently, Dovecure China Medical Concierge Platform can seamlessly integrate visa assistance and hospital communication, leveraging its partnered hospital network to help patients significantly speed up the invitation letter application process and effectively reduce the pre-trip preparation time.

The core document checklist includes:

Valid passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended period of stay, with at least one blank visa page

Hospital invitation letter: Issued by a Class A tertiary hospital or designated international medical institution in China, including the patient's full name, diagnosis, treatment plan, intended duration of stay, and affixed with the official hospital seal

Medical diagnosis certificate: Issued by a local physician in the applicant's home country, stating the medical condition and the necessity of seeking treatment in China, with a Chinese or English translation version provided

Visa application form: Submitted via the Chinese Visa Online Application System (COVAS), printed out and signed by the applicant

Recent passport photo: White background, 48mm×33mm in size

Proof of financial support: 3-month bank statement or pre-authorization letter from medical insurance

Return flight reservation

Supporting Services

 All countries have restrictions on the entry of Chinese herbal medicines.

It is recommended to pay attention to the following points:

  • Confirm in advance the allowed categories and quantities specified by your home country's customs;
  • Prioritize choosing no-decoction granules and vacuum pre-decocted traditional Chinese medicine, which are much easier to carry than raw herbal materials;

DOVECURE can assist you in preparing Chinese-English bilingual diagnosis certificates, prescriptions and medicine lists for customs inspection; If it is inconvenient to carry with you, we can also arrange cold-chain mailing for pre-decocted herbal potions or Chinese medicine granules. Before your departure, DOVECURE will help you check the relevant regulations of your destination country to ensure that the medicine can be brought back smoothly without any issues.

Inpatient & Emergency

Emergency observation refers to the emergency observation ward, which is for patients who do not need inpatient admission for the time being, but have unstable conditions and require short-term monitoring.

Differences from inpatient admission:

  • Duration: Usually no more than 72 hours. You can leave the hospital once your condition improves, and you will be transferred to the inpatient ward if your condition worsens.
  • Cost: It follows the emergency medical charging standard, and the reimbursement policy is different from that of inpatient treatment.
  • Management: There are fewer restrictions, and family members can stay with the patient.

If the doctor suggests emergency observation but you face language barriers or have no one to take care of you, DOVECURE can provide emergency patient accompaniment services, handle all procedures on your behalf and assist in doctor-patient communication.

 It depends on your condition: For critical emergencies, the 120 ambulance will send you to the nearest hospital with qualified treatment capabilities for priority rescue, and you cannot choose the hospital on your own.

If your condition is stable and it is a general emergency, you can go to your target hospital by yourself, and it is recommended to prioritize top-tier public hospitals with international departments and foreign-related outpatient clinics.

If you are not sure how to choose, you can contact DOVECURE. We will recommend a suitable hospital for you based on your location and condition, and assist with pre-connection in advance to speed up the consultation process.

Call 120 right away if you experience:

  • confusion, coma, convulsions;
  • chest pain, tightness, breathing difficulty, cold sweats (suspected heart attack or stroke);
  • severe trauma, heavy bleeding, bone fractures;
  • intense abdominal pain, hematemesis, hemoptysis; sudden facial droop, limb weakness, slurred speech (stroke warning signs);
  • severe allergy with breathing difficulty.

For common cold, mild diarrhea, low fever, small scrapes, you can take a taxi to the hospital emergency department on your own.

If unsure, contact ‌DOVECURE 24/7 Health Advisor‌ to assess the need for medical care and find the right hospital, avoiding delayed treatment or unnecessary trips.

Most 120 operators only speak Chinese, and language barriers may delay rescue.

When calling, clearly state your exact address (hotel, road, house number), main symptoms, and keep your phone line open. You can describe symptoms with simple English keywords.

If communication is difficult, call ‌DOVECURE 24/7 Emergency Hotline‌ first. We will connect with 120 on your behalf, communicate your address and condition, and arrange a nearby patient coordinator to assist you at the hospital.

Step-by-step hospital visiting workflow for foreigners in China

It is recommended that foreign patients prepare the following items before medical visits: the original valid passport, previous medical records translated into Chinese or English in advance (if any), and commercial insurance cards. Please confirm in advance the insurance claim rules covering Chinese mainland, the language services of the target hospital's international medical department, and complete the medical appointment 1 to 14 days in advance.

For foreign nationals unfamiliar with relevant rules, you can directly use Dovecure China medical escort platform to handle full-process supporting services including visa application, flight and hotel booking, bilingual medical escort, medical record translation and other supporting services in one stop, to complete the medical visit smoothly and effortlessly.

The hospitalization process is as follows:

Foreign patients are required to carry valid identity documents (such as a passport, etc.) for medical visits. When making online appointments, you need to provide your passport number or the number of your Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card to complete real-name authentication. At present, most hospitals in China support 7 types of identification documents including passports and Foreign Permanent Resident ID Cards to be used seamlessly across all procedures such as registration, payment, and medicine collection. Patients with commercial medical insurance also need to bring their insurance cards at the same time.

Foreign patients can make medical appointments through the following channels:

‌Hospital official APP or WeChat Mini Program‌: Follow the official account or mini-program of your target hospital, add the patient information in the "Personal Center" section, and select "Passport" as the ID type.

‌Phone reservation‌: Call the hospital's dedicated appointment hotline directly.

‌Official online platforms‌: For example, the 114 Appointment Registration Platform in Beijing has launched an official English version.
