Department Details
The Department of Spine Surgery, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, is a National Key Clinical Specialty designated by the National Ministry of Health, a Key Cultivation Discipline of the National Ministry of Education, a Key Discipline of Guangdong Provincial Higher Education Institutions, a Key Medical Specialty of Guangdong Province, and a National Osteoporosis Diagnosis and Treatment Research Center. It serves as a site for doctoral and master's degree conferral and a postdoctoral research station. The department maintains long-term collaborative relationships with numerous renowned academic and medical institutions both internationally and regionally, with annual exchanges of experts and scholars for academic communication.
Currently, the department has 27 physicians, including 8 chief physicians (professors), 9 associate chief physicians (associate professors), 4 attending physicians (lecturers), and 6 resident physicians (teaching assistants), with 23 holding doctoral degrees. There are 47 nurses, including 1 chief nurse and 5 nurse supervisors. Additionally, there are 4 full-time laboratory personnel, including 2 professors.
The department possesses strong clinical capabilities, having established sub-specialty groups focusing on spinal deformities, spinal infections, minimally invasive surgery, cervical spine surgery, osteoporosis, and spinal tumors. It enjoys a high reputation domestically, as well as in Hong Kong, Macau, and Southeast Asia. The scope of diagnosis and treatment covers all pathologies from the skull base to the sacrococcygeal region, with major directions including spinal deformities, spinal tuberculosis, osteoporosis, spinal tumors, spinal cord injury management, and clinical diagnosis and basic research of degenerative spinal diseases (such as cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spondylolisthesis, and lumbar spinal stenosis). The department is particularly adept at managing critical and emergency cases with successful outcomes.
The department keeps pace with technological advancements, having established the nation's first "Robot-Assisted Precision Spine Surgery Platform," and developed into a national-level 3D printing clinical application platform and an orthopedic virtual reality clinical application platform. These innovations have fundamentally transformed teaching and clinical models, promoting the discipline's deep integration into the digital field.
In recent years, the department has achieved substantial research outcomes, securing over 40 international, national, and provincial/ministerial research grants. It has published more than 70 articles, including over 50 indexed in SCI, and obtained over 40 national invention patents. The department has received one "15th Five-Year Plan" Major Scientific and Technological Progress Award from the People's Liberation Army, one First-Class Military Scientific and Technological Progress Award, two First-Class Guangdong Provincial Scientific and Technological Progress Awards, one First-Class Military Medical Achievement Award, two Second-Class Military Medical Achievement Awards, and two Second-Class Scientific and Technological Progress Awards from Guangdong Province and the military.
The department has been awarded three Collective Third-Class Merits and one Collective Second-Class Merit. In 2009, it was recognized as a "Model Unit" and "Advanced Party Branch" by the Organization Department of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China. It has repeatedly received honors such as "Advanced Unit," "Advanced Grassroots Party Branch in Excellence and Innovation," "May Fourth Red Flag Youth League (General) Branch," "Outstanding Public Welfare Organization," and "Outstanding Public Welfare Project" from Southern Medical University. Additionally, it has been honored multiple times by Nanfang Hospital as "Advanced Unit," "Advanced Grassroots Party Organization," "Outstanding Research Organization and Management Unit," "Advanced Department in Telemedicine Assistance and Outreach," "Nursing Excellence Advanced Collective," and "Outstanding Staff Home."
