The Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at Shanghai Children's Medical Center is primarily engaged in medical, teaching, and research work in the fields of TCM preventive healthcare, integrated Chinese and Western medicine collaborative treatment and rehabilitation for children and adolescents aged 0-18 years. Integrating the essence of syndrome differentiation treatment experience and academic thoughts from various TCM pediatric schools and lineages in Shanghai, as well as domestically and internationally, it continuously inherits and innovates. It has developed three sub-specialties: TCM Pediatrics, Acupuncture-Moxibustion and Tuina, and TCM Rehabilitation, making it one of the most comprehensive teams in terms of sub-specialty categories in China. The scope of diagnosis and treatment covers liver-brain system disorders such as high-risk infants for cerebral palsy, facial palsy, tic disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), language disorders, autism, sleep disorders, dystonia, and epilepsy; lung system disorders including spontaneous sweating, respiratory tract infections, rhinitis, snoring, chronic cough, asthma, eczema, and urticaria; spleen-stomach system disorders such as drooling, swallowing difficulties, anorexia, constipation, and diarrhea; heart-spleen system disorders including purpura, aplastic anemia, and obesity; kidney system disorders such as precocious puberty, night sweats, enuresis, hematuria, proteinuria, and nephropathy; and musculoskeletal disorders including atlantoaxial instability (including subluxation), facet joint dysfunction of the spine, muscular torticollis, scoliosis, and joint pain. Continuously strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration between Chinese and Western medicine, it has achieved excellent therapeutic outcomes, particularly in the clinical treatment of various difficult diseases such as refractory rhinitis, adenoid hypertrophy, chronic cough, asthma, tic disorders, narcolepsy, and nephropathy, as well as in early intervention for high-risk infants for cerebral palsy based on early screening tools like General Movements (GMs) and Test of Infant Motor Performance (TIMP), receiving widespread praise from parents of affected children. Adhering to the TCM concept of "combined treatment with diverse methods," it selectively utilizes diversified TCM therapeutic approaches such as acupuncture, moxibustion, tuina, internal and external application of Chinese herbal medicine, and physical factor therapy, featuring distinctive comprehensive treatment characteristics. It employs a series of TCM plasters made from brand-name Chinese herbs, including Sanfu plaster, Sanjiu plaster, growth plaster, rhinitis plaster, tic plaster, ADHD plaster, anorexia plaster, constipation plaster, diarrhea plaster, and pneumonia chest application ointment. From a pediatric psychological perspective, it has established acupuncture techniques characterized by minimal or even no pain. It has developed a series of TCM rehabilitation methods, such as "Tongdu Tiaoshen" (unblocking the Governor Vessel and regulating the spirit) and "Yindai Daoqi" (guiding the belt vessel and directing qi), which regulate the mind and harmonize qi and blood. These techniques reduce children's suffering, enhance active participation, and yield significant therapeutic effects, making them highly popular among children and their parents. The department has established specialized and disease-specific collaborative relationships with the National Clinical Research Base of TCM (Pediatric Base) and several affiliated hospitals, including Longhua Hospital, Shuguang Hospital, Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Shanghai Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Shanghai Seventh People's Hospital, all affiliated with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The physicians responsible for each sub-specialty have received medium- to long-term professional training domestically and internationally, mastering the latest developments and techniques in their fields, and play an outstanding role in the TCM diagnosis, syndrome differentiation, and treatment of difficult cases.
