Department Details
The Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Shanghai Children's Medical Center, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, is a member unit of the National Multi-Center Study Group for Pediatric Snoring, a member unit of the Newborn Hearing Screening Expert Group, the location of Shanghai's first Pediatric Hearing Disorder Diagnosis and Treatment Center, and a designated hospital for cochlear implantation in Shanghai.
In recent years, the department has focused on academic team development, with further improvements in disciplinary infrastructure, achievements in faculty team building, and a significant enhancement in research capabilities. Alongside infrastructure improvements, the department has achieved gratifying results in talent recruitment and training. Currently, the department has 28 full-time physicians, researchers, and technicians, along with one consulting professor and one visiting professor, forming a strong disciplinary talent echelon. The department regularly sends young and middle-aged academic骨干 to top children's hospitals in the United States for advanced training, maintaining long-term collaborative relationships. It has also recruited multiple professionals from both domestic and international sources, striving to build a world-class pediatric-specific Otorhinolaryngology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department.
For a long time, the department has concentrated on systematic clinical and basic research on pediatric sleep and hearing disorders, and has successively undertaken multiple research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, Shanghai Shenkang Hospital Development Center, Shanghai Municipal Health Commission, and Pudong New Area Science and Technology Commission. Numerous research findings have been published in important domestic and international academic journals. In recent years, commissioned by the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the department has been responsible for the national multi-center clinical research on pediatric snoring and the national newborn hearing screening and intervention program, achieving positive results.
The department currently handles nearly 200,000 outpatient and emergency visits annually, with over 2,000 surgeries per year. The Otorhinolaryngology division has seven subspecialties: Sleep Disorders, Hearing Disorders, Nasal Allergic Diseases, Airway Diseases, Ear Deformity Reconstruction, Molecular Genetic Analysis of Deafness, and Head and Neck Tumors. The Stomatology division has four subspecialties: Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery, Oral Mucosal Diseases, and Early Orthodontic Treatment.
The Sleep Disorders Diagnosis and Treatment Center at Shanghai Children's Medical Center is the first pediatric sleep disorders center in Shanghai. It includes a joint sleep disorders clinic, a snoring clinic, and a specialized sleep clinic. The team comprises sleep respiratory experts, pediatric behavioral health specialists, psychological counselors, oral and maxillofacial experts, otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery experts, and traditional Chinese medicine therapists. It provides comprehensive clinical treatments for pediatric sleep issues, including behavioral interventions (e.g., sleep behavior correction, weight loss), pharmacotherapy, surgery, oral and maxillofacial orthodontics, and CPAP. The center is equipped with overnight polysomnography and sleep screening tools (wristbands and respiratory-cardiac coupling technology), offering multiple methods and technologies for diagnosing pediatric sleep disorders. It can perform drug-induced sleep endoscopy and sleep cine MRI, providing strong technical support for diagnosing complex pediatric sleep disorders. For patients with "adenoid facies," various early orthodontic treatments are available. The department has extensive experience in the comprehensive treatment of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), with surgical scope covering multiple areas of otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery, achieving internationally advanced clinical diagnostic and treatment levels.
The Pediatric Hearing Disorder Diagnosis and Treatment Center is equipped with internationally advanced diagnostic equipment, capable of performing various hearing tests in infants and young children, including ASSR (Auditory Steady-State Response), Tone-Burst ABR (Frequency-Specific Auditory Brainstem Response), OAE (Otoacoustic Emissions), sound field testing, and pure-tone audiometry. The center features a specialized hearing clinic staffed by professional audiologists responsible for fitting and adjusting hearing aids in infants. Under the center, a Cochlear Implant Center provides precise imaging and audiological diagnostics, comprehensive pediatric behavioral assessments, and a fast-track surgical appointment system. It has adopted internationally leading techniques such as small-incision surgical approaches, simultaneous bilateral cochlear implantation, and round window membrane fenestration. Collaborating with American speech-language therapists, the center leverages an advanced speech training team to create a distinctive pediatric cochlear implant center. It is among the hospitals with the youngest cochlear implant recipients. Excellent anesthesia techniques and advanced postoperative monitoring ensure surgical safety for children with complex congenital conditions. Additionally, the hearing center offers several internationally advanced technologies, such as balloon dilation of the Eustachian tube for recurrent secretory otitis media and endoscopic tympanoplasty for cholesteatoma otitis media. The center has long-term collaborations with multiple domestic and international charitable foundations, providing medical financial assistance to children from impoverished regions, aiming to benefit thousands of hearing-impaired children.
The Nasal Allergic Diseases Diagnosis and Treatment Center addresses the rising incidence of pediatric rhinitis in recent years by conducting basic and clinical research on allergic rhinitis. It has established a specialized allergic rhinitis clinic, utilizing allergen screening and specific desensitization therapy, achieving positive results.
The Airway Diseases Diagnosis and Treatment Center, in addition to treating conditions such as laryngeal tumors, pyriform sinus fistula, and congenital laryngeal cartilage dysplasia, has matured its management of various airway diseases. The combined use of flexible and rigid bronchoscopy for airway foreign body removal has become a routine procedure. Balloon dilation, argon plasma coagulation, and holmium laser therapy have shown good efficacy in treating pediatric airway stenosis. Recently, autologous rib cartilage transplantation for infant laryngeal stenosis has reached an international level.
The Ear Deformity Reconstruction Center, starting in 2016, was among the first in China to pioneer non-invasive correction of congenital ear deformities, enabling early intervention for congenital auricular malformations to avoid future invasive surgical treatments.
The Molecular Genetic Diagnosis and Treatment Center for Deafness operates on the platform of the Shanghai Children's Medical Center Translational Medicine Institute, the first pediatric translational medicine research institution in China. It offers comprehensive whole-genome testing for deaf children, enabling early detection of hearing loss and identification of its causes. It also identifies carriers of deafness susceptibility genes early, providing guidance for couples planning further pregnancies.
Oral Medicine: Treatment of dental caries in primary teeth, pulp and periapical diseases, vital pulp therapy in young permanent teeth (pulp capping and pulpotomy), apexification, cosmetic restoration of fractured anterior teeth with light-cured composites, supragingival scaling, and pit and fissure sealing and fluoride application for primary and permanent teeth.
Oral Surgery: Extraction of supernumerary and complex teeth, excision of labial mucoceles, frenuloplasty for ankyloglossia, and emergency debridement and suturing for traumatic injuries.
Oral Mucosal Diseases: Diagnosis and treatment of gingivitis, ulcers, herpetic stomatitis, oral thrush, geographic tongue, and angular cheilitis.
Early Orthodontic Treatment: Management of crossbite in primary and mixed dentition, mild to severe crowding, space maintenance for premature loss of primary teeth, and elimination of不良 oral habits. For malocclusion caused by various types of dental misalignment, mandibular retrusion, and crossbite in adolescents, early orthodontic treatment is provided using clear aligners, removable appliances, functional appliances, and other modalities.
