The Department of Dermatology and Venereology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is a comprehensive medical unit integrating clinical practice, teaching, and research. It is one of the largest, best-equipped, and most technically robust dermatology and venereology departments among teaching hospitals in China. The department has a well-structured talent echelon, including 2 full professors, 2 chief physicians, 2 associate professors, 6 deputy chief physicians, 5 senior charge nurses, 1 senior technician, 2 technicians, and 9 nurses. Among them, there is 1 doctoral supervisor and 4 master's supervisors. Department members serve as standing committee members of the Guangdong Dermatology Society, standing committee members of the Dermatology Branch of the Guangdong Medical Doctor Association, members of the Pathology Group of the Chinese Dermatology Society, members of the Therapeutics Group of the Chinese Integrative Medicine Society, members of the Guangdong Laser Society, and members of the Guangdong Allergy Society. In 2006, the department recruited a dermatologist who earned a doctoral degree in a Western country to return to China and serve in a leadership position, significantly enhancing the department's innovation and progress in medical care, education, and research. To meet the diagnostic and treatment needs of patients, the department offers 10 specialized clinics, including general dermatology clinics, a sexually transmitted disease (STD) diagnosis and treatment center, laser therapy, fungal skin diseases, pigmentary disorders (vitiligo), cutaneous hemangiomas, acne, alopecia (alopecia areata, male pattern baldness), hand dermatoses, lupus erythematosus, and psoriasis. It also has fixed professor clinics and on-duty professor clinics, with 2 to 6 professors seeing patients daily. The STD diagnosis and treatment center also has fixed professor clinics. Due to the hospital's proximity to the School of Basic Medicine and the strong reputation of both the hospital and the department, the outpatient clinics are highly favored by patients. In 2008, the outpatient and emergency visits exceeded 100,000, with an average daily volume of over 420 patients and a peak daily volume approaching 700, ranking among the top general hospitals in the province. The inpatient unit has 12 beds, admitting approximately 200 patients annually, with a clinical improvement rate of over 95% after treatment. Patients primarily come from Guangzhou and other regions within the province, often presenting with rare, complex, and difficult-to-treat conditions. The long-term experience in managing numerous challenging and critical dermatology cases from within and outside the province has enabled the department to accumulate extensive diagnostic and treatment expertise, achieving a diagnostic accuracy rate at the domestic advanced level. The department was among the first in the province to perform dermatopathological examinations, with a history of nearly 20 years. This has provided rich experience in pathological diagnosis and enhanced the department's diagnostic capabilities for skin diseases. The dermatopathological diagnostic level is highly regarded both within and outside the province, and the department frequently receives pathological consultation slides from other hospitals in the province and city. Dermatopathological examination is applicable to all skin diseases, particularly rare and complex cases. Recently, the department has also initiated scalp pathological examinations to understand the pathological changes in hair loss disorders and to differentiate between scarring alopecia and non-scarring alopecia, such as alopecia areata. Auxiliary diagnostic tests include patch testing for contact allergens, used in conditions like eczema and dermatitis, and direct immunofluorescence for detecting immunoglobulin deposition diseases such as bullous diseases and lupus erythematosus. In recent years, the department has focused on advancing the laser specialty, adding new treatment modalities to existing ones. A batch of advanced laser equipment has been acquired, including a full-wavelength tunable phototherapy device, long-wave and narrowband UVB phototherapy devices, a CO2 laser, a microwave therapy device, a Q-switched frequency-doubled laser, and an ALA photodynamic therapy device. Treatment items now include, in addition to superficial skin lesions, senile warts, condyloma acuminatum, and pigmented nevi, conditions such as pigmented spots, nevus of Ota, basal cell carcinoma, vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and chronic eczema. Among these, the newly introduced narrowband UVB phototherapy device has shown good efficacy for psoriasis and vitiligo, while ALA photodynamic therapy for condyloma acuminatum results in less damage and lower recurrence rates compared to traditional physical treatments. Other specialized treatments include scalp injections for alopecia areata and helium-neon laser therapy for herpes zoster and chronic ulcers. Planned projects include topical immunotherapy (application of contact sensitizer DPCP) for severe alopecia areata. Dermatological surgery is also a major direction for the department's development. Autologous epidermal grafting for vitiligo has been performed for nearly a decade with good outcomes. Preparations are underway for surgical treatments for axillary osmidrosis and hair transplantation for male pattern and androgenetic alopecia, as well as scarring alopecia. The laboratory includes specialized units for dermatopathology, mycology, STD testing, and immunocytology. The STD laboratory was the first in the province to pass the "Level 3" standardized laboratory evaluation in 2003. Laboratory equipment includes fluorescence microscopes, microphotography and imaging systems, cryostats, inverted microscopes, CO2 incubators, and clean benches, supporting clinical testing and research in STDs, fungal diseases, and dermatopathology. Recently, with hospital support, a cell culture laboratory has been established, equipped with instruments such as CO2 incubators, clean benches, and low-temperature cell centrifuges, enabling flow cytometry for cell surface antigen detection and cell culture for diagnosing skin immune diseases. The department was also the first in China to perform Chlamydia trachomatis culture and drug sensitivity testing, achieving a domestic advanced level in STD diagnosis and treatment. The department has strong research capabilities, focusing on areas such as sexually transmitted diseases, pigmentary skin disorders, dermatopathology, fungal diseases, autoimmune skin diseases like lupus erythematosus, and hair disorders like alopecia areata. Department members have published over 100 academic papers in domestic and international journals, with 5 included in SCI. They have received 5 research and teaching awards at various levels, edited 3 professional books, and secured over 1 million RMB in national and provincial research grants. In teaching, the department is responsible for undergraduate lectures and clinical internships, and has trained 30 master's students. Currently, there are 3 doctoral students and 9 master's students. Recent teaching innovations include delivering dermatology and venereology lectures in English to eight-year program undergraduates. In terms of social service, the department emphasizes public education on STD prevention and common skin diseases, focuses on professional ethics, and is dedicated to serving patients wholeheartedly.
