(I) Basic Department Information The Department of Endocrinology of our hospital was established in 1957 by Professor Zhou Shoukai, a nationally renowned endocrinology expert and then Vice President of Sun Yat-sen Medical College. It was one of the few endocrinology departments in the country at that time. As early as the mid-1980s, it had the largest endocrinology ward in South China and established a well-equipped endocrinology laboratory with a comprehensive range of tests. Under the leadership of senior endocrinologists Professor Huang Baoyun and Professor Yu Binjie, as well as successive department heads Professor Liang Yiquan, Professor Hu Guoliang, and Professor Weng Jianping, the department has developed rapidly. It was one of the earliest units in China to train master's and doctoral students, became one of the first national clinical pharmacology bases for endocrinology in 1997, was approved as a key discipline of Guangdong Province in 2003, and became a national key discipline in 2007. The Department of Endocrinology consists of the endocrinology ward, endocrinology laboratory, diabetes center, and endocrinology specialist outpatient clinics. Currently, there are 4 senior professional title holders (including 3 doctoral supervisors), 3 associate senior professional title holders, 3 attending physicians, 2 resident physicians, and 3 technical staff. Professor Li Yanbing, the department head, also serves as the Deputy Chair of the Youth Committee of the Diabetes Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and as a standing editorial board member of the *Chinese Journal of General Practitioners*. Professor Xiao Haipeng serves as the Vice President of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Vice President of the Endocrinology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and an editorial board member of the *Chinese Journal of Diabetes*. Professor Hu Guoliang serves as a standing committee member of the Guangdong Diabetes Branch. (II) Clinical Work The endocrinology ward currently has 46 authorized beds, with 56 beds actually in operation. Professor-level outpatient clinics and specialist outpatient clinics are held every day from Monday to Friday. The annual outpatient visits exceed 60,000, and the annual number of inpatients exceeds 1,000, with patients coming from Guangdong Province, South China, Southwest China, and other regions, as well as Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. Our department is at the domestic advanced level in the clinical and laboratory examination and treatment of endocrine metabolic diseases such as diabetes, thyroid diseases, adrenal diseases, pituitary diseases, and obesity. It was the first in China to perform intensive insulin pump therapy for newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients, prolonging the disease-free remission period. The main results have been published in renowned domestic and international journals such as *Diabetes Care*, the *Chinese Medical Journal*, and the *Chinese Journal of Diabetes*, and have been promoted nationwide. Our department also has rich experience and advanced technology in the prevention and treatment of diabetic complications, having discovered and reported the first case of type A insulin resistance syndrome in China. In terms of thyroid diseases, it was one of the first laboratories to conduct tests for free thyroid hormones, sensitive TSH, and TRAb, and was also the first to perform arterial embolization treatment for hyperthyroidism. In adrenal diseases, comprehensive laboratory tests have been carried out for more than 20 years, and close collaboration with the Department of Urology has placed the diagnosis and treatment of various adrenal diseases at a leading level in China, with thousands of cases treated to date. The diagnosis of hypothalamic-pituitary diseases and the collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of pituitary tumors are also at the leading level in China. The Diabetes Center provides free health education for diabetes patients every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoon, conducted by专职 diabetes education nurses. Significant results have been achieved in popularizing diabetes knowledge and preventing complications, with a large number of patients attending the lectures. (III) Scientific Research and Talent Training Since its establishment, our department has placed great emphasis on scientific research and teaching. It now has an endocrinology laboratory covering an area of over 1,000 square meters. Over the years, it has undertaken dozens of scientific research projects at various levels, including those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, Guangdong Province, and Guangzhou City. It has organized multicenter clinical studies involving several large hospitals in China, such as "Evaluation of Different Intervention Methods for Blood Glucose Control in Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Patients," with main results published in *The Lancet* and the *Chinese Medical Journal*. It led a survey on hospitalized diabetes patients in 10 large hospitals in Guangdong Province, with main results published in the *Chinese Medical Journal* and other journals. It has led and participated in more than 20 international and domestic multicenter clinical trials of new drugs and served as the lead unit for the Phase I and Phase II clinical trials of "Insulin Inhalation Powder." Over the years, it has received numerous scientific research and medical achievement awards, such as the Third Prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award in 2004, the First Prize of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award in 2006, and the First Prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award in 2007, jointly with the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. It has hosted various academic conferences at different levels, such as the 10th National Conference of the Diabetes Branch of the Chinese Medical Association in 2006 and the 4th National Conference on Molecular Diabetes in 2004, holding a significant position in the field of endocrinology in China. As a training unit for doctoral and master's students, our department has trained more than 10 medical doctors or postdoctoral fellows, over 30 master's students, and more than 100 visiting physicians. Most of these individuals have become academic leaders in endocrinology at various hospitals in Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City.
