I. Basic Department Information The Department of Gastroenterology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University has been a key discipline supported by the hospital for many consecutive years. It is an authorized site for doctoral and master's degrees in Gastroenterology at Sun Yat-sen University, as well as a postdoctoral workstation. It serves as a national training base for gastroenterology and digestive endoscopy specialists, a vice-chairman unit of the Chinese Society of Gastroenterology, Chinese Medical Association, and a National Drug Clinical Trial Base. Since its establishment, under the leadership of renowned gastroenterologists such as Kuang Heling, Zhang Tianyu, Hu Pijin, and Chen Minhu, the department has achieved significant progress, gradually becoming a discipline with strong capabilities in clinical care, teaching, and research. It holds considerable influence and reputation nationwide, including in Hong Kong, Macau, and internationally. In 2010, it was recognized as a National Key Clinical Specialty. The Department of Gastroenterology comprises inpatient wards, an Endoscopy Center, a Gastroenterology Laboratory, and specialized outpatient clinics. It currently has 9 professors and chief physicians (including 2 doctoral supervisors) and 10 associate professors and associate chief physicians. The department chair, Professor Chen Minhu, also serves as the Vice President of the First Affiliated Hospital, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society of Gastroenterology, Standing Committee Member of the Chinese Society of Digestive Endoscopy, Deputy Head of the Gastrointestinal Motility Group of the Chinese Society of Gastroenterology, Chairman of the Guangdong Medical Association Gastroenterology Branch, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the *Chinese Journal of Digestion*, and editorial board member or特邀 reviewer for over 10 domestic and international journals. Professor Hu Pijin serves as the Director of the Drug Clinical Trial Institution at the First Affiliated Hospital, Advisor to the Chinese Society of Gastroenterology, Head of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Group, and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the *Journal of Digestive Disease*. The Vice Department Chair, Chief Physician Cui Yi, also serves as the Director of the Endoscopy Center, Vice Chairman of the Guangdong Medical Association Digestive Endoscopy Branch, Head of the Endoscopic Ultrasound Group, and Deputy Head of the Esophageal Varices Group of the Chinese Society of Digestive Endoscopy. Vice Department Chair, Professor Zeng Zhirong, serves as the Deputy Head of the Helicobacter pylori Group of the Chinese Society of Gastroenterology. Vice Department Chair, Professor Zhong Bihui, also serves as the Director of the Department of Infectious Diseases, member of the Interventional Group of the Chinese Society of Gastroenterology, and member of the Guangdong Medical Association Gastroenterology Branch. Chief Physician Liu Sichun serves as the Vice Chairman of the Guangdong Medical Association Hepatology Branch. II. Clinical Work The Department of Gastroenterology includes the main campus and the Huangpu branch, with a total of 81 designated beds and 3 nursing units. The annual outpatient volume exceeds 90,000, and the annual number of discharged patients surpasses 1,900. The Endoscopy Center performs over 18,000 gastrointestinal endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures annually, achieving an overall capability at the domestic advanced level. It conducts over 7,500 endoscopic ultrasound procedures, a cumulative total of over 2,500 ERCP procedures, nearly 400 small bowel endoscopy procedures, and over 800 capsule endoscopy procedures. Our department was an early adopter of research on *Helicobacter pylori* (Hp) in China, achieving significant results in Hp epidemiology, clinical diagnosis and treatment, and immunoprevention, with some outcomes reaching world-class levels. In recent years, our diagnostic and treatment capabilities for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have reached a domestically leading level, establishing these as our specialty areas. Since 2004, our department established a specialized GERD outpatient clinic within the gastroenterology clinic, becoming one of the first departments nationwide to set up such a clinic. We treat over a thousand GERD patients annually, attracting many patients with refractory GERD and establishing our leading position in GERD diagnosis and treatment. Leveraging the specialized GERD clinic, our department has conducted extensive research on GERD epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnostic techniques, and treatment strategies, publishing numerous high-quality papers in domestic and international journals. We apply research findings to clinical practice to guide GERD diagnosis and treatment, providing new solutions for clinical management. In the national evaluation of specialized GERD outpatient clinics organized by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, our department was recognized as one of the three outstanding GERD clinics in China, based on our technological advantages, medical service excellence, and research leadership. Furthermore, as the first unit in China to perform multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH monitoring in GERD patients, our department established a training center for this technology, providing multiple training sessions for personnel from major hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and other cities. Professor Chen Minhu, as Deputy Head and a primary author of the Chinese GERD Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines, participated in their development and has delivered numerous academic lectures on this topic nationwide, playing a significant role in advancing GERD clinical practice and research in China. In 2003, our department established an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) research group and specialized clinic led by Professors Hu Pijin and Chen Minhu. We were early adopters in China of a standardized IBD diagnosis and treatment system and a comprehensive follow-up system, establishing a complete patient information archive and tissue bank. We also initiated a health education and psychological counseling system for IBD patients. In September 2007, we pioneered clinical research in China using the novel biologic TNF-α monoclonal antibody infliximab for treating Crohn's disease. To date, over eighty patients have received this treatment with good therapeutic outcomes, making our hospital the earliest and largest user of biologics for Crohn's disease in China. Professor Hu Pijin led the drafting of the consensus opinion on biologic therapy for IBD for the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Collaborative Group of the Chinese Society of Gastroenterology. Through years of persistent effort, the specialized IBD clinic has become a hallmark of our department, attracting numerous patients from Guangdong Province and neighboring provinces. IBD has become the third most common inpatient diagnosis in our department, following gastrointestinal tumors and gastrointestinal bleeding. III. Research Activities The Department of Gastroenterology has received over 60 research grants, achieved 14 scientific research awards, published over 400 academic papers, edited over 20 textbooks and monographs, and participated in over 60 international academic exchanges. In the past three years, we have led 6 National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects and 20 ministerial and provincial-level research projects. In 2011, we received a Second Prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award. In 2009, we received a Second Prize of the Natural Science Award from the Ministry of Education. In 2005, we received both the Second Prize and Third Prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award. In 2006, we obtained one National Invention Patent. We have published 175 papers in domestic and international journals, including 52 papers in SCI-indexed journals. Since 1992, supported by multiple research grants including the NSFC, our department has conducted over a decade of systematic basic and clinical research on the molecular pathogenesis of gastric cancer. Key research areas include individual genetic susceptibility, molecular signaling pathways, and chemoprevention. This series of studies has significantly deepened our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of gastric cancer, providing new targets for early prevention and treatment. Research papers from this project have been presented or exchanged at major domestic and international academic conferences and have resulted in 35 high-level publications, including 19 SCI-indexed English papers in high-impact journals such as *Gut*, *J Proteome Res*, *Carcinogenesis*, *Aliment Pharmacol Ther*, *Cancer Lett*, *Clin Exp Metastasis*, and *Histol Histopathol*. These papers have been cited over 257 times in domestic and international journals, including 213 citations in international journals, generating significant academic impact. Research achievements have received the Second Prize of the Natural Science Award (nominated by the Ministry of Education), the Second Prize of the National Education Commission Science and Technology Progress Award, the First Prize of the Guangdong Provincial Medical and Health Science and Technology Progress Award, the Second Prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award, the Third Prize of the Chinese Medical Science Award, the Second Prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, and one National Invention Patent. For many years, our department has conducted clinical and basic research on hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. Research topics cover viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, cholestatic liver disease, cirrhosis, esophagogastric variceal bleeding, cirrhotic ascites, portal hypertension, hepatic encephalopathy, hepatocellular carcinoma, fatty liver disease, drug-induced liver injury, pancreatitis, and other hepatobiliary and pancreatic conditions. In this area, we have received 10 research grants, published 61 research papers, including 11 SCI-indexed papers. Among these, 8 papers have an impact factor (IF) greater than 5, including 2 papers in *Hepatology* (IF 11.355), the top journal in the field of liver disease research. In the past five years, extensive research has been conducted on GERD, covering epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnostic techniques, and treatment strategies. We have published 8 SCI-indexed articles in this field, including three in high-impact international journals such as *Endoscopy* and *Am J Gastroenterol* (IF > 6). Over thirty articles have been published in domestic authoritative journals, and we have edited one relevant monograph, maintaining a leading position in clinical research in this field in China.
