**Department Overview:** The Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is a National Key Discipline, a National Clinical Key Specialty, a Key Discipline of Guangdong Province, a Key Specialty of the Guangdong Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission, a training site for master's and doctoral students, a postdoctoral research station, a national training base for endoscopic otorhinolaryngology, and a national training base for resident physicians in otorhinolaryngology. The current academic leader is Professor Xu Geng, recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund and Vice Chairman of the Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Committee of the Chinese Medical Association. The Dean of the Otorhinolaryngology Hospital is Professor Wen Weiping, Vice President of the Otorhinolaryngology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. The department boasts a nationally first-class team of medical, research, and teaching professionals. Since the establishment of the Otorhinolaryngology Hospital in 2003, the discipline has expanded rapidly. It was designated a National Key Discipline by the Ministry of Education in 2007 and a National Clinical Key Specialty by the Ministry of Health in 2011. In 2012, the average daily outpatient volume was approximately 580 visits, with 3,598 inpatient admissions and 5,180 surgical procedures. The department has 96 medical and nursing staff, including 32 physicians and 2 researchers (13 senior consultants, 8 associate senior consultants). It runs 17 professor-led clinics and specialized clinics for Otology, Rhinology (including Allergy), Laryngology (including Voice Disorders), and Head and Neck Oncology. This specialty has established itself as the largest, most advanced, and most comprehensively equipped center for otorhinolaryngology medical education, research, and clinical care in South China, laying a solid foundation for becoming a top-tier research-oriented clinical specialty in China. **Clinical Work:** Each subspecialty possesses strong technical capabilities, enabling comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of common, critical, acute, and severe otorhinolaryngological conditions. The department holds distinct technical advantages and characteristics, both domestically and internationally, particularly in the following areas: Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) (maintaining the highest number of cases performed in China, reaching 15,000 by 2012), Endoscopic Dacryocystorhinostomy, Transnasal Endoscopic Orbital Tumor Resection (pioneered internationally), Endoscopic Resection of Lesions in the Lateral Skull Base and Petrous Apex (pioneered internationally), Endoscopic Resection of Mid-Skull Base Sellar Lesions (including pituitary adenoma resection), Repair of Complex Cerebrospinal Fluid Rhinorrhea, Modified Endoscopic Lothrop Procedure (frontal sinus drillout), Tympanoplasty and Hearing Reconstruction, Cochlear Implantation, Acoustic Neuroma Resection, Speech Rehabilitation for Deaf-Mute Patients, Endoscopic Resection of Recurrent Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, Suspension Laryngoscopy Combined with Hopkins Endoscope for Pediatric Airway Foreign Body Removal (pioneered internationally), Modified Supracricoid Partial Laryngectomy and Horizontal Midline Laryngectomy (pioneered internationally), Resection, Reconstruction, and Phonatory Function Restoration for Laryngeal and Cervical Esophageal Tumors, Suspension Microlaryngoscopic CO2 Laser Microsurgery, Surgery for Pediatric and Adult Snoring/Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Allergen Monitoring and Immunotherapy for Allergic Rhinitis, etc. **Scientific Research:** Supported by Phase I and Phase II of the 985 Project and the National Key Discipline Project, the department currently possesses two laboratories: a Clinical Surgical Anatomy Training Laboratory and a Biology Laboratory (covering Immunology, Genetics, and Molecular Biology). Translational medicine, aimed at clinical application, closely integrates basic and clinical research. In the past five years (up to 2012), the department has undertaken and led 1 key project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), 12 general projects of the NSFC, 1 project from the National Ministry of Health (Public Welfare Industry Special Fund, 6.14 million RMB), and a total of 53 projects including key projects of the Provincial Natural Science Foundation and sub-projects of the National Basic Research Program (973 Program). Total research funding amounts to over 20 million RMB. The department has published 69 SCI-indexed papers (with the highest impact factor being 11.0, and 8 papers with an IF exceeding 5.0), ranking among the top otorhinolaryngology departments in China in terms of both quantity and quality. Professional academic works include 2 edited volumes (chief editor) and 2 co-edited volumes. **Talent Development:** The department trains and provides 10-20 outstanding master's and doctoral students annually for the country, who are highly sought after by employers across various sectors. It regularly organizes national and international training courses, including the Nasal Endoscopic Minimally Invasive Surgery Course, Temporal Bone Dissection Course, Skull Base Anatomy Course, and Laryngology Head and Neck Surgery Course, which are highly acclaimed by professionals both domestically and internationally.
