Zhu Yuming, male, born in July 1965, Chief Physician, currently serving as the Administrative Director of the Department of Thoracic Surgery and Secretary of the Party Branch of Thoracic Surgery at Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital. He is a member of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Group of the Chinese Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Standing Committee Member of the Chinese Medical Association for Thoracic Surgery, Standing Committee Member of the Chinese Research Hospital Association for Thoracic Surgery, Member of the Shanghai Medical Association for Thoracic Surgery, Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Society for Thoracic Surgery, and Chairman of the Lung Cancer Surgery Group of the Shanghai Anti-Cancer Association Thoracic Tumor Committee.
Since graduating from Shanghai Second Medical University in July 1988, he has been engaged in clinical work in thoracic surgery for nearly 32 years.
Director Zhu Yuming has long been dedicated to the research, translation, and promotion of minimally invasive surgical treatment for thoracic diseases. As one of the earliest experts in China to perform uniportal thoracoscopic surgery and the world's leading expert in uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) with the most comprehensive range of completed procedures, he has received high praise from the thoracic surgery community both domestically and internationally. He has been invited multiple times for global surgical live broadcasts and, as the first thoracic surgeon in China since the founding of the nation to be invited abroad for surgical demonstrations, he has traveled to Western developed countries to demonstrate surgeries and share minimally invasive surgical techniques and experience, effectively enhancing China's international standing in thoracic surgery.
Under his leadership, the department established the norms and standards for uniportal VATS surgery, innovatively proposed the surgical approach for uniportal VATS lobectomy, which has been included in the international classic thoracic surgery textbook *Shields’s General Thoracic Surgery* and *SugarBaker’s Adult Chest Surgery*. He participated in the formulation of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS) consensus on uniportal VATS lobectomy (the only one from China) and established the standard for managing intraoperative bleeding during uniportal VATS. This research has provided more evidence-based medical evidence for the choice of surgical resection scope in early-stage lung cancer and has been included in *A Lung Cancer Journey, 1973 to 2016* and the *2016 Progress in Cancer Prevention and Treatment in China*.
Additionally, his research team has produced high-quality research outputs, including the world's largest reported series of uniportal VATS surgeries and the largest reported series of subxiphoid uniportal VATS surgeries. Domestically, he pioneered the establishment of an international VATS training program (the only thoracic surgery骨干 training base in China named "Francis Fontan Fellowship" by the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, EACTS, and the only minimally invasive thoracic surgery training base in China officially recommended by multiple developed countries' societies). For the first time in history, EACTS established a special fund to select European骨干 surgeons for training at this center; the Japanese Association for Chest Surgery (JACS) and the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS) officially recommend this center as a minimally invasive training base. To date, it has trained over 600 international trainees from nearly 80 countries/regions (mainly from Japan, South Korea, and Western developed countries and regions, including academic elites such as presidents of major thoracic surgery societies in Europe and the US and presidents of national thoracic surgery societies, with long-term training of 11 Fellows). He pioneered global live webcasts of Chinese thoracic surgeries (25 times), including at the EACTS annual meetings (twice) and thoracic surgery annual meetings in 14 countries such as the US, Germany, Japan, the UK, and Canada, with 51,000 views of surgical live broadcasts and 123,000 plays. He internationally pioneered uniportal/subxiphoid VATS surgical instruments and uniportal surgical auxiliary devices. The patented uniportal instruments are used in hundreds of hospitals worldwide, with the highest market share in China. The world's top surgical instrument manufacturer Scanlan proactively sought cooperation, naming and promoting the instruments internationally as "SPH (Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital)," with sales ranking first globally in thoracic surgery instruments for two consecutive years. Furthermore, he has been innovative in minimally invasive complex surgical techniques, actively promoting their dissemination, and diligently cultivating future talents in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, making significant contributions in this field.
In recent years, Director Zhu Yuming has participated in publishing over 100 papers, including 30 SCI papers. He has also edited one monograph and co-edited five monographs and translations. Additionally, he has participated in the design of five patents, including four invention patents. Due to his outstanding contributions to minimally invasive thoracic surgery, over the past five years, Director Zhu Yuming has been awarded the 2015 Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Second Prize (5th completer), the 2016 Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Third Prize (1st completer), the 2017 Chinese Medical Science and Technology Second Prize (4th completer), the 2018 Chinese Medical Science and Technology Second Prize (2nd completer), the 2018 Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Achievement Promotion Award (1st completer), the 2019 Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Second Prize (3rd completer), and the 2019 Shanghai First Medical Craftsman Title. In 2003, he initiated clinical research on lung transplantation in China, including single lung transplantation, double lung transplantation, lung retransplantation, living-donor lobar lung transplantation, pediatric lung transplantation, elderly lung transplantation, living-donor lobar lung transplantation, and the application of ECMO in lung transplantation, making his team the only one in China to have performed all types of lung transplantation procedures. The survival rate of lung transplantation is leading in China. As a key member of the lung transplantation team, he received the 2005 Shanghai Science and Technology Achievement Second Prize, the 2006 Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Second Prize, and the 2012 Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award Second Prize.
