The Neurological ICU of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University was established in 1998. It is one of the few specialized neurological ICUs in China and the first of its kind in Guangdong Province. Leveraging the advantages of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, it aims to become a nationally influential neurological ICU with a well-configured layout, high-quality services, advanced management, excellent medical standards, superb techniques, and outstanding personnel. The basic facilities of the Neurological ICU are complete, with 8 beds. Common diseases treated include acute cerebrovascular disease, intracranial hypertension, cerebral herniation, acute cerebral infarction, myasthenia gravis with myasthenic crisis, Guillain-Barré syndrome with respiratory muscle paralysis, central nervous system infections, symptomatic epilepsy, and status epilepticus. Active implementation of plasma exchange and combined high-dose corticosteroid pulse therapy with gamma globulin has achieved favorable outcomes in rescuing respiratory muscle paralysis from various causes. Sequential weaning from mechanical ventilation followed by extubation has reduced the rate of reintubation to nearly zero, improving patient compliance and shortening the length of ICU stay. Enteral nutrition has been vigorously promoted as the nutritional support therapy for critically ill neurological patients, shifting away from the previously dominant parenteral nutrition. Meticulous care for pressure ulcers has achieved zero incidence of pressure ulcers in paralyzed patients. In 2009, the "Youth Civilization Unit of the Neurological ICU, First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University" was established, and in 2010, the Neurological ICU became a pilot ward for the "High-Quality Nursing Service Demonstration Project."
