The Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine and Geriatric Oncology is a first-level clinical department of the hospital, established in 1976, with a total of 32 open beds. It is a comprehensive oncology treatment department characterized by the integration of traditional Chinese medicine and modern medicine. At different stages of cancer treatment, it leverages the unique features of traditional Chinese medicine, combining the strengths of both Chinese and Western medicine, with a focus on symptom management. The goal is to improve the objective response rate of cancer treatment while enhancing the quality of life and prolonging the survival time of cancer patients. While providing standardized anti-tumor treatment, our department employs various traditional Chinese medicine therapeutic approaches to develop individualized integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment plans for patients with common solid tumors such as lung cancer, gastrointestinal tumors, and breast cancer. In addition to oral Chinese herbal medicine, Chinese herbal injections, acupoint application, and herbal fumigation and washing, we also carry out over ten appropriate techniques of traditional Chinese medicine, including acupuncture, moxibustion, tuina, and auricular acupressure, to relieve patients from common clinical symptoms such as pain, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, and numbness in the hands and feet. Our department emphasizes humanistic care, creating a warm ward environment, and implements a patient-centered "four-all" care model—whole person, whole course, whole family, and whole team. While providing professional medical and nursing care, we demonstrate respect and care for life by medical staff. After nearly 50 years of development, the department team has gradually grown, now comprising 40 medical, nursing, research, and technical staff, including 10 with senior professional titles and 1 renowned traditional Chinese medicine practitioner in the capital. The department has 1 doctoral supervisor, 2 master's supervisors, and 3 postdoctoral co-supervisors from Peking University Health Science Center. Professor Li Pingping, former Party Secretary of our hospital and academic leader of the department, was selected in late 2016 as a guiding teacher for the "National Famous Old Traditional Chinese Medicine Expert Inheritance Studio Construction Project" by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She has established "National Famous Old Traditional Chinese Medicine Expert Li Pingping Inheritance Studios" in Beijing, Shandong, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Qinghai, and other places, promoting inheritance work and cultivating high-level traditional Chinese medicine talents. Guided by the holistic concept of traditional Chinese medicine and the theory of syndrome differentiation and treatment, this discipline has conducted clinical research on the quantitative assessment of cancer symptoms and Chinese herbal interventions, explored the mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicine through basic experiments, implemented and promoted comprehensive assessment methods for elderly cancer patients and clinical research, and conducted in-depth studies on the standardized treatment of common symptoms in cancer patients and the comprehensive assessment and individualized treatment of elderly cancer patients, accumulating rich clinical experience. Department members, as primary completers, have successively won the Second Prize of the Ministry of Education's Science and Technology Progress Award, the Third Prize of the Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award, and the Third Prize of the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine's Science and Technology Award. As core members, they have also received multiple honors, including the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. Our department is a national and Beijing-level "Flagship" department for the collaboration of Chinese and Western medicine. It is a key discipline of integrated Chinese and Western medicine oncology under the Beijing Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; a national demonstration unit for traditional Chinese medicine work in comprehensive hospitals; the fourth batch of Beijing's demonstration traditional Chinese medicine work construction projects in comprehensive hospitals; a high-level key discipline of traditional Chinese medicine under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; one of the first batch of "Demonstration Wards for Standardized Cancer Pain Treatment" designated by the Ministry of Health; a Cancer Pain Treatment Center of the Chinese Medical Association; a Level 3 laboratory of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine—the Chinese Herbal Pharmacology (Oncology) Laboratory; a Beijing Advanced Staff Small Home; a Beijing Workers' Pioneer; and a demonstration department for medical humanities construction in municipal hospitals under the Beijing Hospital Management Center.
