The Department of Genitourinary Medical Oncology at Peking University Cancer Hospital was renamed from the former Department of Renal Cancer and Melanoma Medical Oncology. Through over a decade of rapid development, the department has accumulated extensive clinical experience in the medical treatment of genitourinary tumors, including renal cancer, urothelial carcinoma, prostate cancer, adrenal tumors, and germ cell tumors, achieving a series of results and ranking among the top in China in terms of professional influence. The annual outpatient volume exceeds 30,000 visits, with over 8,000 inpatients treated. The department has 10 full-time physicians and 1 full-time researcher, all of whom hold doctoral degrees, including 3 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, and 1 assistant researcher. The discipline leader, Director Guo Jun, serves as the Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO) and is the Vice Chairman of the CSCO Renal Cancer Committee, Urothelial Carcinoma Committee, and Prostate Cancer Committee. The department is one of the lead units for compiling the CSCO guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of renal cancer, urothelial carcinoma, and prostate cancer, and serves as the Vice Chairman unit of the Rare Renal Cancer Collaboration Group of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association. In recent years, five young physicians have returned from overseas studies, and the department has established strong collaborations with multiple international cancer centers. The department's professional focus is on the diagnosis and treatment of genitourinary system tumors, primarily through systemic medical therapy, and it collaborates with departments such as surgery, radiation oncology, interventional therapy, and nuclear medicine in a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach. The discipline emphasizes the integration of clinical care, teaching, and research, combining clinical practice with basic science to guide and promote standardized diagnosis and treatment of genitourinary tumors in China. The department leads and undertakes multiple clinical studies of new drugs for genitourinary tumors, including axitinib, pazopanib, everolimus, vorolanib (CM082), toripalimab, and disitamab vedotin, which have been approved for treatment indications, thereby benefiting more cancer patients. Research directions primarily focus on tumor immunotherapy, drug resistance and its reversal, anti-tumor angiogenesis, and targeted gene therapy for tumors. The department has received eight grants at the national, provincial, university, and hospital levels, totaling over five million yuan in research funding. It has published nearly 100 SCI papers, including multiple research articles in internationally renowned oncology journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Annals of Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Clinical Cancer Research. Several studies have been selected for oral presentations at ASCO annual meetings, and numerous research findings have been cited by the NCCN Kidney Cancer Guidelines, Chinese Kidney Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines, and Chinese Urothelial Carcinoma Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines, making significant contributions to the advancement of genitourinary tumor diagnosis and treatment both domestically and internationally.
