The Department of Urologic Oncology at Peking University Cancer Hospital was established in 2012 and is a key component of the hospital. Through the joint efforts of department leaders, including Director Yang Yong and Professor Du Peng, it has developed into a discipline of considerable scale with notable recognition and influence in the field of urologic oncology in China. The department currently has 30 inpatient beds and over 30 staff members, including 10 physicians: 2 chief physicians and professors, 1 chief physician and associate professor, 2 associate chief physicians, 4 attending physicians, and 1 resident physician. Since its establishment, with the support of hospital leadership and the dedication of all department members, the department has experienced rapid development across various areas. It has acquired equipment related to urologic oncology, including the Da Vinci robotic system, laparoscopic equipment, flexible and rigid ureteroscopes, holmium laser devices, plasma resectoscopes, monopolar resectoscopes, cystoscopes, and ureteroscopes. The department currently performs and has mastered diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for common and complex urological diseases, with a particular focus on minimally invasive surgical treatment and precision pharmacotherapy for urologic tumors, including systemic treatments for prostate cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and bladder cancer. Da Vinci robot-assisted and laparoscopic minimally invasive surgeries include: nephron-sparing surgery for renal cell carcinoma (via retroperitoneal or transabdominal approach), radical nephrectomy (via retroperitoneal or transabdominal approach), nephroureterectomy, radical cystectomy with urinary diversion, adrenal tumor resection, radical prostatectomy, retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for testicular cancer, and inguinal lymph node dissection for penile cancer. Routine traditional minimally invasive urological procedures are also performed, such as transurethral resection of bladder tumors, transurethral plasma resection of the prostate, and flexible ureteroscopic holmium laser resection of upper urinary tract tumors with nephron preservation. The department routinely conducts various complex urologic oncology surgeries, including transabdominal radical nephrectomy for large renal cell carcinoma with inferior vena cava tumor thrombectomy, large pelvic sarcomas, large retroperitoneal malignant tumors, radical cystectomy with various types of urinary diversion or neobladder reconstruction. The current scope of diagnosis and treatment covers common and rare urologic tumors, including renal cell carcinoma, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, penile cancer, renal pelvic cancer, ureteral cancer, and pelvic sarcomas. Leveraging the multidisciplinary strengths of Peking University Cancer Hospital, the department actively collaborates with medical oncology to provide multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment for various urologic tumors, offering patients comprehensive care including tumor diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted drug therapy, significantly improving the survival of urologic oncology patients. In the field of research, the department has led or participated in over 80 clinical trials, focusing on diagnostic and therapeutic innovations for urologic tumors such as prostate cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and bladder cancer, substantially enhancing the clinical management of these diseases.
