The Department of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors at Peking University Cancer Hospital was established in June 2007, founded by Professor Fang Zhiwei, a renowned domestic expert in bone and soft tissue tumors. After nearly 18 years of development, it has become a nationally recognized sarcoma diagnosis and treatment center. In its early stages, the department started with treating its first patient and gradually initiated regular sarcoma seminars in the western Beijing area, took the lead in establishing the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors Committee of the Beijing Anti-Cancer Association, successfully hosted the China-Japan Sarcoma Collaboration Forum and national-level sarcoma diagnosis and treatment training courses, and co-organized an osteosarcoma forum with the world-renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center in the United States. It also regularly holds the National Forum on New Advances in Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors at Peking University Cancer Hospital, continuously expanding its industry influence. The department's core clinical focus is on mesenchymal tumors of the skeletal and muscular motor system, specifically covering benign and malignant bone tumors of the limbs, pelvis, and spine, benign and malignant soft tissue tumors, as well as various metastatic tumors and skin malignancies requiring orthopedic surgical intervention. In terms of technical specialties, the department centers on comprehensive treatment, achieving domestic leading or advanced levels in standardized comprehensive treatment of soft tissue sarcomas, standardized neoadjuvant chemotherapy and limb-salvage therapy for osteosarcoma, precise resection and prosthetic reconstruction of bone tumors and bone metastases in the limbs/spine/pelvis, repair and reconstruction of soft tissue defects and neurovascular injuries, and surgical treatment of melanoma. Simultaneously, as an active clinical center for sarcoma drug development in China, the department has completed and advanced multiple domestic and international innovative drug registration clinical trials, covering areas such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and intratumoral injection. In recent years, numerous achievements have been presented orally or as posters at top international oncology conferences such as ASCO and ESMO, demonstrating outstanding research translation capabilities. In terms of the medical team, the department currently has 27 beds, with 4 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, and 3 attending physicians. Most physicians hold doctoral degrees, and key clinical staff have study or visiting experience at renowned medical institutions in the United States, Europe, and Japan. The current director is Fan Zhengfu, and the deputy director is Liu Jiayong. The team possesses strong clinical and research capabilities. Regarding academic status, the department has consistently served as the chair unit of the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors Committee of the Beijing Anti-Cancer Association. It is the initiating unit, standing vice-chair and secretary-general unit, and bone tumor group leader unit of the Orthopedics Branch of the National Association of Health Industry and Enterprise Management. Additionally, it serves as the vice-chair/standing committee unit of relevant committees under the China Anti-Cancer Association, China Medical Education Association, Chinese Association of Plastic and Aesthetic Medicine, and Beijing Medical Doctor Association, as well as the national deputy leader unit for study groups on soft tissue sarcomas, bone metastases, drugs, and precision therapy, playing a significant role in industry standard setting and academic leadership.
