The Second Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at Peking University Cancer Hospital was established in 2007. Over the past 17 years, the department has consistently been at the forefront of surgical treatment, standardized comprehensive therapy, and translational and clinical research for liver cancer, biliary tract tumors, and pancreatic tumors in China. Based on robust and comprehensive surgical skills, advanced and integrated oncological concepts, and a mature and progressive team, the department established the first Soft Tissue and Retroperitoneal Tumor Center in China in 2015, pioneering new frontiers in the diagnosis, treatment, and cutting-edge research of retroperitoneal tumors. Currently, surgical and comprehensive treatment of retroperitoneal tumors has become another key professional development direction for the department, with treatment outcomes comparable to leading international centers and leading the field nationwide. The department currently has 33 beds and a total of 40 medical staff members. The team is mature, stable, and well-structured, with an annual outpatient volume of over 16,000 visits and approximately 2,500 inpatient admissions per year. The primary disease categories treated include retroperitoneal tumors, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, colorectal cancer liver metastases, intrahepatic/extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Under the leadership of the academic leader, Professor Hao Chunyi, the team emphasizes tumor biological behavior and a holistic view of cancer treatment, advocating the philosophy of "mind guiding hands, integrating concepts with techniques," and focusing on precise patient stratification and individualized, tailored treatment. On one hand, for patients assessed as needing such interventions, the team is willing and adept at tackling difficult cases, performing high-complexity surgeries including pancreatectomy with vascular resection and reconstruction, retroperitoneal sarcoma resection with multi-organ resection, and associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS), bringing hope to numerous patients and families who had previously been turned away. On the other hand, while adhering to appropriate indications, the team also emphasizes trauma control and minimally invasive concepts, actively performing laparoscopic and robot-assisted hepatobiliary and pancreatic tumor resections, as well as organ-preserving surgeries for pancreatic and duodenal tumors. In addition to surgical procedures, the team follows tumor biological behavior and disease characteristics to implement a rich array of perioperative comprehensive therapies, aiming to maximize survival benefits for patients through individualized comprehensive treatment. Examples include perioperative chemotherapy combined with targeted and immunotherapy for retroperitoneal sarcoma, conversion therapy for borderline resectable/locally advanced pancreatic cancer, perioperative conversion therapy for complex hepatocellular carcinoma/cholangiocarcinoma, and comprehensive treatment for colorectal cancer liver metastases, all of which are diagnostic and therapeutic hallmarks of the department. Furthermore, the department has independently initiated or actively participated in a large number of clinical studies related to liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, and retroperitoneal sarcoma. Academically, the department has consistently led the nation. For example, in 2007, Professor Hao Chunyi authored China's first guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer liver metastases and successfully established the multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment platform for colorectal cancer liver metastases at Peking University Cancer Hospital in collaboration with relevant hospital departments. In 2009, the department pioneered in China the pancreaticoduodenectomy combined with resection and anastomosis of a long segment of the portal vein-superior mesenteric vein without the need for artificial vascular grafts, and published a paper on this. In 2012, it successfully performed Asia's first associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) and published a paper in 2014. In 2015, the department published China's first expert consensus on retroperitoneal soft tissue sarcoma, the "Peking University Cancer Hospital Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Primary Retroperitoneal Soft Tissue Sarcoma," and based on this, in 2019, in collaboration with the Surgical Operation Group of the Chinese Medical Association Surgery Branch, the Sarcoma Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, and the Soft Tissue Tumor Branch of the China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health Care, published the "Chinese Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Primary Retroperitoneal Soft Tissue Sarcoma," promoting standardized treatment for retroperitoneal sarcoma nationwide. "Life, Sunshine, Dignity" has been the departmental motto established by Professor Hao Chunyi since the department's founding in 2007. It represents the commitment of all medical staff in the department to use strong professional capabilities, rigorous professional attitudes, and full humanistic care to strive to save and prolong life, protect the dignity of every patient, and encourage patients to face their illness and life with a sunny attitude. Striving to help more patients prolong overall survival and improve quality of life has always been the primary goal and unwavering direction of the team.
