The First Department of Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery at Peking University Cancer Hospital was established in 1996. After nearly three decades of continuous development, it has become a highly influential diagnosis and treatment center in the field of liver tumor surgery in China. The department currently operates 33 inpatient beds and has a professional team of 16 physicians, including 10 with senior professional titles (3 chief physicians and 7 associate chief physicians), forming a well-structured talent echelon. Since its establishment, under the leadership of Directors Huang Xinfu and Xing Baocai, all physicians in the department have adhered to the mission of "prolonging patient survival, improving patient quality of life, and alleviating patient suffering." By integrating the latest concepts of comprehensive treatment for hepatopancreatobiliary tumors with cutting-edge surgical techniques, the department actively implements individualized, standardized, and multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment, forming distinctive diagnostic and therapeutic characteristics. The department has actively promoted individualized and standardized treatment for hepatopancreatobiliary tumors in China, establishing a strong academic brand and disciplinary influence, and has become one of the nationally renowned hepatopancreatobiliary tumor surgery centers. In particular, it has accumulated extensive experience in the treatment of colorectal cancer liver metastases, performing over 800 surgeries for this condition annually. Its clinical and research levels are leading in China, and its standardized diagnostic and treatment procedures and favorable surgical outcomes have been widely recognized within the field. In the area of complex liver surgery, the department routinely performs various high-difficulty resection procedures, including those for giant liver tumors, hilar tumors, caudate lobe tumors, and complex repeat hepatectomies. It systematically applies preoperative three-dimensional reconstruction assessment and individualized liver function reserve measurement for precise evaluation, routinely performs intraoperative ultrasound and contrast-enhanced ultrasound-guided resection of liver malignancies, and skillfully implements precise hepatectomy techniques such as complex liver metastasis resection combined with ablation, laparoscopic hepatectomy, and anatomical segmentectomy, providing safer and more effective surgical options for complex cases. While developing high-difficulty new technologies, the department consistently prioritizes medical safety, establishing a comprehensive perioperative management system. Through rigorous preoperative evaluation, meticulous intraoperative techniques, and standardized postoperative management, it has achieved a low incidence of postoperative complications. The department collaborates with multiple domestic and international diagnosis and treatment centers on clinical research related to hepatopancreatobiliary tumors and actively leads and participates in domestic and international multicenter clinical trials. In particular, it conducts in-depth research in the fields of conversion therapy and neoadjuvant therapy for colorectal cancer liver metastases and hepatocellular carcinoma. Significant progress has been made in research areas including molecular classification of hepatocellular carcinoma, construction of prognostic prediction models for colorectal cancer liver metastases, next-generation sequencing-guided individualized therapy, and neoadjuvant and conversion therapy. The department has published over 200 articles in top international journals, including *Nature*, *Cancer Cell*, *Nature Communications*, and *Annals of Surgery*. While emphasizing surgical resection, the department actively advocates for a multidisciplinary comprehensive treatment model. It was among the first in China to lead the establishment of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) for colorectal cancer liver metastases, promoting neoadjuvant and conversion therapy, which has significantly increased patients' opportunities for curative treatment, benefiting a large number of cancer patients and making important contributions to advancing precision treatment for liver tumors. In the future, the department will continue to dedicate itself to the innovation and development of liver tumor surgical techniques, providing patients with higher quality and more precise medical services.
