The predecessor of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, was the Isotope Laboratory (later renamed the Nuclear Medicine Laboratory) established by Professor Zhao Huiyang in 1958. It is one of the earliest units in China to conduct clinical applications and research on isotopes and is also one of the origins of nuclear medicine in China. It serves as an important clinical, scientific research, teaching, and pharmacological base for nuclear medicine in the country, as well as a key discipline of Fudan University and a "985" key discipline. It is the affiliated department of the Institute of Nuclear Medicine, Fudan University. Its overall medical and research levels are leading both domestically and internationally. Over the past seven years, it has consistently ranked first in East China and first in Shanghai in the specialty reputation ranking of the Fudan version of the hospital ranking. In 1959, based on the Isotope Laboratory, the Radiological Medicine Teaching and Research Group and the Institute of Radiological Medicine were established. Our department compiled the national unified textbook "Radiological Medicine" for nationwide teaching needs. Between 1959 and 1960, the Department of Nuclear Medicine at our hospital also organized specialized classes in radiological medicine, covering three parts: isotope applications, radiation injury and radiation sickness, and radiological health protection. Later, due to the development and needs of the atomic energy industry, the parts on radiation injury, radiation sickness, and radiological health protection were relocated from Zhongshan Hospital to a new site. The part on isotope applications remained at Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital and was later renamed the Department of Nuclear Medicine. In 1983, the Department of Nuclear Medicine was designated as a clinical pharmacological base by the Ministry of Health and served as a training base for clinical nuclear medicine physicians of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The Department of Nuclear Medicine at Zhongshan Hospital has always emphasized the construction of a personnel梯队. It currently has 57 professional technical personnel, including 26 physicians, 17 technical staff, 6 nursing staff, and 8 radiopharmaceutical staff. The current department director, Professor Shi Hongcheng, also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Nuclear Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a Standing Committee Member of the Nuclear Medicine Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Chairman of the Grassroots Work Committee, Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Nuclear Medicine Society, and a Standing Editorial Board Member of the Chinese Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging. The Department of Nuclear Medicine currently covers an area of over 5,800 square meters and consists of four centers: the PET Molecular Imaging Center, equipped with 4 PET/CT units and 1 PET/MR unit, performing approximately 17,000 PET/CT examinations annually; the Single-Photon Functional Imaging Center, equipped with 2 SPECT/diagnostic CT units, 1 SPECT unit, 1 dedicated cardiac machine, and 1 dedicated breast machine, performing approximately 14,000 single-photon imaging examinations annually; and the Radionuclide Targeted Therapy Center, equipped with 1 SPECT/diagnostic CT unit, 1 ultrasound diagnostic device, and 9 radionuclide therapy beds, treating approximately 500 cases of differentiated thyroid cancer annually. As an important component of the comprehensive teaching hospital affiliated with Fudan University, the Department of Nuclear Medicine has undertaken teaching tasks in nuclear medicine for undergraduate and international students at Fudan University School of Medicine for many years. At the same time, as a master's and doctoral program site for medical imaging and nuclear medicine, it has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents for the development of nuclear medicine in China, training over 40 master's and doctoral students. Since 2010, it has become one of the first national standardized residency training bases, participating in the revision of the Ministry of Health's specialist training outline (nuclear medicine specialty) and contributing to the compilation of the People's Health Publishing House specialist textbook "Nuclear Medicine." It undertakes the training tasks for over 10 residents and provides an important clinical training base for rotational training of clinical graduate students in various specialties. In recent years, the Department of Nuclear Medicine has received funding for 15 research projects at various levels, totaling over 5 million yuan, including 5 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and 3 talent fund projects at various levels. The department has published a total of 335 papers.
