Department Details

To adapt to the changing spectrum of infectious diseases, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, established its Department of Infectious Diseases in 2014, specializing in "complex and difficult-to-treat bacterial and fungal infections, including drug-resistant infections" and "fever of unknown origin." It has been upgraded to create China's first comprehensive infection model integrating "diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases," enabling Chinese patients with infectious diseases to receive diagnosis and treatment from infectious disease specialists at a level consistent with international standards. The Department of Infectious Diseases and the Hospital Infection Management Department of Zhongshan Hospital serve as the training base for the "Bacterial and Fungal Infection Diagnosis and Treatment Training Project (Peiyuan Project)" of the National Health Commission's Medical Management Center, the National Quality Control Center for Hospital Infection Management, and the Collaborative Centre of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) in China. The Department of Infectious Diseases currently operates two wards with 51 beds. To address various public health events and the diagnosis and treatment of severe pneumonia, it has specially set up 14 independent negative-pressure wards equipped with a visual intensive care monitoring system, a Philips portable ultrasound system, high-flow humidification therapy devices, non-invasive ventilators, ventilators, and an Olympus high-definition electronic bronchoscopy system, among other advanced medical equipment. Additionally, it offers specialist outpatient services for infectious diseases, specialized and general outpatient clinics, a multidisciplinary diagnostic clinic for "fever of unknown origin," and undertakes the management of fever clinic diagnosis and treatment, clinical diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases throughout the hospital, and guidance on antimicrobial drug use. Under the leadership of Professor Hu Bijie, the department head, the Department of Infectious Diseases currently comprises 24 clinical physicians, including 23 with medical doctorates and 1 with a master's degree, with 100% of members holding a master's degree or higher. Among them, there are 4 with senior technical titles and 19 with intermediate titles. The Department of Infectious Diseases, together with professionals in hospital infection management, microbiologists, and clinical pharmacists specializing in antimicrobial drugs, forms the powerful "Zhongshan Hospital Infection Prevention and Control Team," which has been awarded the 2020 "Shanghai Quality Gold Award" and the 2023 "Shanghai Workers' Pioneer."
