The Department of Hepatobiliary Medical Oncology is a key component of the Liver Cancer Institute of Fudan University. Under the leadership of Academician Tang Zhaoyou, the Tumor Group of Zhongshan Hospital, Shanghai First Medical College, was established in 1968. In 1969, the Liver Tumor Group of Zhongshan Hospital, integrating internal and surgical medicine, was formally established with dedicated wards. In 1978, it was renamed the Liver Cancer Research Laboratory of Zhongshan Hospital. In 1988, with approval from the Ministry of Health, it was renamed the Liver Cancer Institute of Shanghai Medical University, under the jurisdiction of Shanghai Medical University, comprising the Department of Liver Tumor Surgery, the Department of Hepatobiliary Medical Oncology, and the laboratory. Following the merger of Fudan University and Shanghai Medical University, it was renamed the Liver Cancer Institute of Fudan University in 2001. In 1983, Lin Zhiying et al. published "Hepatic Artery Embolization for Primary Liver Cancer" in the Chinese Journal of Oncology. In 1986, Yang Binghui et al. published a randomized controlled trial of cisplatin in the treatment of primary liver cancer in the Chinese Journal of Oncology, which was the first randomized controlled trial of chemotherapy for liver cancer in China. In 1991, Professor Yang Binghui, as the principal investigator, undertook the national "Eighth Five-Year Plan" key project, "Prospective Cohort Study of Screening Protocols for High-Risk Populations of Liver Cancer," which established the early detection protocol for liver cancer. Commissioned by the Ministry of Health, he also compiled the "Guidelines for Liver Cancer Screening," which are still used domestically and internationally. In 1989, Yang Binghui, Lin Zhiying, Lu Jizhen, and Ye Shenglong participated in the formulation of the first "Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines for Primary Liver Cancer" by the Department of Medical Administration of the Ministry of Health. Since 2000, radiofrequency and microwave ablation therapies for liver cancer have been implemented. In 2009, Professor Ye Shenglong organized the Liver Cancer Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, the Liver Cancer Group of the Chinese Society of Hepatology of the Chinese Medical Association, and the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology to formulate the first "Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Primary Liver Cancer" in China. In 2011, 2017, 2019, and 2021, Professors Ye Shenglong and Ren Zhenggang, as key members, participated in the formulation of the "Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines for Primary Liver Cancer" (2011, 2017, and 2019 editions) by the Department of Medical Administration of the Ministry of Health and the Medical Administration and Hospital Authority of the National Health Commission, as well as the "Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines for Primary Liver Cancer" (2022 edition). After nearly 50 years of development and accumulation, the Department of Hepatobiliary Medical Oncology has formed a talent team that combines senior, middle-aged, and young professionals, with a reasonable gradient, comprehensive technical expertise, and unity and stability. The department currently has 34 active physicians, including 9 professors/chief physicians, 6 associate professors/associate chief physicians, and 19 attending physicians and residents. The proportion of physicians with doctoral degrees accounts for 80%. The department has 4 doctoral supervisors and 4 master's supervisors, as well as 5 teaching professors at Fudan University Shanghai Medical College. Several professors hold positions in important international and national academic institutions, including the International Liver Cancer Association (ILCA), the Asia-Pacific Primary Liver Cancer Experts Association (APPLE), the Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the Hepatology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, the Liver Cancer Professional Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the Liver Cancer Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology, the China Medical Biotechnology Association, the Clinical Application Professional Committee of Medical Biotechnology, the Precision Medicine Branch, the Gene Therapy Branch, the Tumor Immunology and Gene Therapy Branch of the Chinese Society of Immunology, the Oncology Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association, the Hepatology Branch, the Shanghai Society of Immunology, and the Liver Cancer Professional Committee of the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Many professors serve as editorial board members for important domestic and international academic journals.
