Department Details
The Department of Retroperitoneal and Soft Tissue Tumor Surgery at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University is one of the key developing disciplines of our hospital. Supported by the General Surgery Department of Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, it routinely conducts clinical diagnosis and treatment for various common and frequently occurring diseases in general surgery, particularly complex and critical cases. Among these, the annual number of retroperitoneal tumor surgeries is approximately 700, ranking first nationwide; the annual number of surgeries for various types of abdominal wall hernias (including complex hernias) exceeds 1,000. Specific surgeries include: (1) Resection of giant retroperitoneal tumors combined with organ resection (e.g., combined pancreaticoduodenectomy, artificial vascular replacement); (2) Cytoreductive surgery for peritoneal metastatic tumors; (3) Total pelvic exenteration; (4) Re-resection of recurrent retroperitoneal tumors; (5) Laparoscopic minimally invasive resection of retroperitoneal tumors; (6) Retroperitoneal lymph node dissection; (7) Minimally invasive surgery for complex hernias such as incisional hernia, parastomal hernia, and hiatal hernia. The founder of the discipline is Chief Physician Lu Weiqi, and the current discipline leaders are Professor Zhang Yong, Deputy Chief Physician Yang Ziang, and Deputy Chief Physician Tong Hanxing. The Department of Retroperitoneal and Soft Tissue Tumor Surgery is one of the earliest specialized units in China dedicated to the surgical treatment of retroperitoneal tumors. Leveraging the hospital's strong comprehensive strength and the solid foundation of the General Surgery Department, under the leadership of the team's founder, Professor Lu Weiqi, and the current department head, Professor Zhang Yong, it pioneered the systematic, standardized, and individualized diagnosis and treatment of such diseases in China. Concurrently established, the multidisciplinary team (MDT) for abdominal soft tissue tumors, centered on surgery, brings together expert strength from over ten related departments, including Medical Oncology, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Pathology, Urology, Orthopedics, and Interventional Radiology. It is the first professional team in China to conduct multidisciplinary discussion and treatment for retroperitoneal tumors, enjoying a high reputation in the field. Over the 15 years since its establishment, the specialty of Retroperitoneal and Soft Tissue Tumors has undertaken multiple major research projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China projects and provincial/ministerial-level Natural Science Foundation projects. Strictly adhering to surgical standards for soft tissue tumors and collaborating with related surgical teams, this specialty holds a leading position both domestically and internationally in treating high-difficulty abdominal, pelvic, and retroperitoneal soft tissue tumors.
Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery is a subspecialty under the Department of Retroperitoneal and Soft Tissue Tumor Surgery. Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University is one of the earliest institutions in China to perform tension-free hernia repair surgeries on a large scale. To better leverage the specialty's advantages and highlight the characteristics of Zhongshan General Surgery, the Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery Working Group was established in 2013, which gradually developed into the Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery subspecialty. Currently, it can perform various types of hernia repair surgeries, including laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal hernia repair, laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal hernia repair, complex incisional hernia repair, parastomal hernia repair, hiatal hernia repair, and abdominal wall tumor resection. The surgeries achieve excellent outcomes, rapid recovery, and extremely low complication rates, with an annual surgical volume exceeding 1,000 cases, garnering very positive social feedback.
