The Rheumatology Group of Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University was established in 1993, with a dedicated rheumatology ward opened in the same year. On August 21, 2011, the group was officially established as the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology. The department was among the first in tertiary hospitals in Shanghai and across China to open a specialized rheumatology ward, fully undertaking medical care, education, research, and the diagnosis and treatment of critically ill patients. It receives and treats patients with complex and difficult diseases from the surrounding East China region, providing more specialized medical services for rheumatology patients while enhancing the hospital's comprehensive disease diagnosis and treatment capabilities. Standardized diagnostic and treatment protocols for common rheumatologic diseases have been established, including systemic lupus erythematosus, anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, dermatomyositis/myositis, Sjögren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, large vessel vasculitis, and gout. Professor Jiang Lindi serves as the academic leader of the department. She holds positions as the President-elect of the Rheumatology Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association, Standing Committee Member of the Rheumatology Society of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Member of the Rheumatology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association (9th-11th terms), Standing Committee Member of the Immunoadsorption Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Standing Committee Member of the Rheumatology and Immunology Professional Committee of the Cross-Strait Medical and Health Exchange Association and Deputy Head of the Vasculitis Group, Deputy Director of the Rheumatology Committee of the Immunotherapy Engineering Branch of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering, Standing Committee Member of the Bone, Joint, and Rheumatology Professional Committee of the Chinese Rehabilitation Medical Association, Standing Committee Member of the Rheumatology and Immunology Professional Committee of the Chinese Research Hospital Association, Standing Committee Member of the Rheumatology and Immunology Professional Committee of the Chinese Women Doctors Association, Member of the Expert Group of the Evidence-Based Medicine Center of Fudan University, and Deputy Director of the Rheumatology, Immunology, and Allergy Center of Fudan University. The department has gradually built a high-quality talent echelon in medical care, education, and research, established key research directions, and developed clinical pathways for common diseases and key research diseases. It has strengthened the work responsibilities and capabilities of physicians at all levels, enhancing the department's influence on multiple fronts. As of June 2022, the department team includes 1 professor and chief physician, 3 associate chief physicians, 8 attending physicians, 1 resident physician, 1 doctoral supervisor, 11 members with doctoral degrees, and 1 postdoctoral training program participant. In recent years, the department has pioneered multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment in the field of rheumatology, conducting diagnostic and therapeutic explorations based on clinical challenges and needs. It has accumulated extensive experience in the comprehensive treatment and basic research of autoimmune diseases. Multiple achievements have been presented and discussed at domestic academic conferences. To date, the department has published over 60 SCI papers, contributed to more than 20 clinical books (including 2 as editor-in-chief and 1 as associate editor), and led 2 general projects and 7 youth projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 China Postdoctoral Science Foundation project, 3 projects of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, 1 project of the Shanghai Shenkang Hospital Development Center, 1 project of the Wu Jieping Medical Foundation, and 1 project of the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission. Under the leadership of Director Jiang Lindi, the department focuses on vasculitis research, exploring the use of MRA, ultrasound, PET-CT, and serological markers for disease diagnosis and assessment. It was among the first in China to conduct comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of Takayasu arteritis, introduced new MRA diagnostic techniques, and first proposed magnetic resonance imaging criteria for evaluating disease activity. The department established semi-quantitative methods using contrast-enhanced ultrasound and PET-CT to assess disease activity, improving the diagnostic rate of Takayasu arteritis, effectively determining disease activity, and enabling the establishment of individualized comprehensive treatment platforms. Collaborations with the Departments of Vascular Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, and Thoracic Surgery have explored integrated medical and surgical treatment strategies for Takayasu arteritis. In 2018, the project "Establishment and Application of a Gout Diagnosis and Treatment System" won the Silver Award for Outstanding Invention in the 30th Shanghai Outstanding Invention Selection Competition (first completer). In 2017, the project "Application of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Black Blood Technique in Assessing Takayasu Arteritis Wall Inflammation" won the Bronze Award for Outstanding Invention in the 29th Shanghai Outstanding Invention Selection Competition (first completer). In 2021, the project "Mechanisms of Aortic Regional Inflammatory Fibrosis in Takayasu Arteritis and Clinical Promotion of Targeted Diagnosis and Treatment" won the Third Prize of the Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award. In 2020, the department ranked 15th nationally and 5th in East China, with a leading domestic position in vasculitis. In 2019, the team released China's first "Multidisciplinary Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Takayasu Arteritis-Related Renal Artery Stenosis," followed by the "Multidisciplinary Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Takayasu Arteritis-Related Hypertension" in 2021, promoting these standards nationwide. In 2015, the department was honored with the titles of "Shanghai Women's Civilized Post" and "Shanghai Health and Family Planning System March 8th Red Flag Collective."
