Department of Diagnostic Radiology

Department Details

The Department of Radiology, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, was established in the 1930s. Professor Rong Dushan, one of the founders of radiology in China, once served as its director. Through the efforts of several generations, including Professors Rong Dushan, Lin Gui, and Zhou Kangrong, it has gradually developed into a nationally renowned and technologically leading imaging department, and was among the first in China to establish a doctoral degree program in Imaging and Nuclear Medicine. The current department director is Professor Zeng Mengsu, with deputy directors Professor Lin Jiang, Professor Zhou Jianjun, and Professor Rao Shengxiang, and Technical Director Deputy Chief Technician Chen Caizhong. Since its inception, the Department of Radiology at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, has consistently been at the forefront of radiology both domestically and internationally, boasting a glorious history and remarkable achievements. In 1958, Professor Rong Dushan chaired a national conference convened by the Ministry of Health to formulate the "Diagnostic Criteria and Staging of Silicosis," which was adopted as a national standard. In the early 1960s, the department established a radiology laboratory approved by the Ministry of Health. Professor Lin Gui, one of the pioneers of interventional radiology in China, during his studies in Sweden, confirmed through research that human liver tumors have dual blood supply from the hepatic artery and portal vein, attracting international attention in the radiology field. In the early 1970s, the department pioneered in China the use of gastrointestinal double-contrast barium studies, trans-splenic portal venography, trans-umbilical portal venography, selective angiography, selective celiac angiography, and superselective hepatic angiography. In 1973, it successfully performed selective coronary angiography. In 1984, it was the first in China to conduct cardiac axial cine and large-film radiography. Professor Rong Dushan's monumental work "X-ray Diagnostics" (three volumes) is the earliest and most authoritative radiology diagnostic monograph in China. Since 1989, the team led by Professor Zhou Kangrong has pioneered CT and MRI diagnosis and staging of liver cancer and small liver cancer in China, with research achievements winning the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2005. Additionally, Professor Zhou Kangrong's edited works "Abdominal CT," "Abdominal CT Diagnostics," and "Body MRI" have become classic monographs in the field of radiology in China, with far-reaching influence. In 2010, the hospital established the Department of Diagnostic Radiology based on the Department of Radiology, with renowned radiologist Professor Zeng Mengsu, a standing committee member of the Chinese Society of Radiology and vice chairman of the Abdominal Imaging Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Association, serving as department director. Since its establishment, the Department of Diagnostic Radiology has developed rapidly, emphasizing clinical practice, teaching, and research equally. As the primary component of "Imaging and Nuclear Medicine," it is a key discipline of the Ministry of Education, a National Key Clinical Specialty Construction Project, a key clinical medical discipline of Shanghai's "Top Priority," a key discipline of the "211 Project," a key construction discipline of Fudan University's "985 Project," a national-level continuing education base for imaging diagnosis, a standardized training base for imaging medicine residents/specialists in Shanghai, a national-level standardized training base for imaging medicine residents, and a master's and doctoral degree-granting program in Imaging and Nuclear Medicine. The Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, is an important national base for radiology clinical practice, research, and talent cultivation, with overall medical and research levels leading domestically and a certain international reputation. **Medical Features** The department possesses strong medical technical capabilities, with 125 on-duty medical and technical staff, including 44 physicians and 81 technicians. Among the physicians, there are 5 with senior professional titles and 9 with associate senior titles, including 2 doctoral supervisors and 4 master's supervisors. Over 80% of the physicians hold graduate degrees, ensuring ample talent reserves and a well-structured personnel hierarchy. The Department of Diagnostic Radiology is equipped with advanced facilities, including multiple high-end large-scale diagnostic devices such as the most advanced 320-slice CT, the latest generation dual-source spiral CT, and 3.0T MRI. The department actively participates in multidisciplinary diagnostic and treatment teams across various clinical departments and offers advanced and general specialist outpatient services, providing consultation and diagnostic opinions on imaging data for complex and difficult cases both within and outside the hospital. The department has established an imaging diagnostic system centered on liver cancer and small liver cancer, including early diagnosis and efficacy evaluation of tumors in other organs. It conducts non-invasive imaging diagnosis of coronary heart disease and various vascular diseases, performs imaging diagnosis and functional assessment of early liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, and utilizes comprehensive imaging methods for pre- and post-organ transplantation evaluation. In recent years, while maintaining the above medical advantages, the department has launched several new clinical technical projects, including: 1. MRI research on small and tiny liver cancer, drafting the expert consensus on the clinical application of the hepatobiliary-specific MRI contrast agent gadoxetic acid disodium (Chinese Journal of Radiology 2016;50(9):641), playing an active role in promoting the use and popularization of this contrast agent in China; 2. CT/MRI research on small pancreatic cancer and evaluation of its resectability; 3. Research on low-dose coronary CT, cardiac MRI, contrast-enhanced small bowel CT, and lung tumor MRI; 4. MR evaluation of liver fibrosis, liver MRI perfusion scanning, dual-energy CT research on renal tumors, and cardiac CT stress perfusion for assessing myocardial ischemia and viability; 5. Carotid artery MRI plaque research and nerve root MRI imaging; 6. CT-guided needle biopsy, among others. These studies have resulted in a series of publications both domestically and internationally, forming the department's distinctive features and significantly expanding its influence.
