The Department of Biliary Surgery at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, was founded by renowned Chinese surgeons Professor Meng Chengwei and Professor Lin Shoucheng. It is one of the earliest specialized departments in China integrating clinical practice, scientific research, and education. Since 1990, the discipline leaders have been distinguished biliary surgeons Professor Wang Bingsheng and Professor Tong Saixiong, with the current leader being Professor Liu Houbao. The team comprises 3 chief physicians, 6 associate chief physicians, 9 attending physicians, and 2 resident physicians. The department specializes in the precision treatment of biliary malignancies (gallbladder tumors, bile duct tumors, ampullary tumors), minimally invasive treatment of biliary stones and congenital bile duct dilatation, and the diagnosis and surgical management of complex biliary disorders such as complicated cholelithiasis and bile duct injuries. Over the past decade, the department has developed rapidly, performing over 2,000 biliary surgeries annually, with minimally invasive procedures accounting for 60%. Since 2013, Professor Liu Houbao has led the establishment of the "Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) for Biliary Diseases." The MDT includes dozens of experts from 13 related departments, providing individualized treatment plans for many patients with complex biliary diseases, including biliary tumors. The department has accumulated experience in comprehensive preoperative resectability assessment of hilar cholangiocarcinoma, appropriate preoperative biliary drainage, and standardized surgical procedures. Approximately 500 radical surgeries for biliary cancer are performed annually, with a year-on-year increase. To date, over 3,000 hilar cholangiocarcinoma surgeries have been completed, including perihilar resection, extended left or right hemihepatectomy combined with total caudate lobectomy, and vascular resection and reconstruction. The department is one of the earliest units in China to perform such surgeries and has one of the highest cumulative case numbers. The department has received numerous awards, including one Third Prize of the Ministry of Health Science and Technology Progress Award, three Second Prizes of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, one Second Prize of the Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award, and one Second Prize and one Third Prize of the Clinical Medical Achievement Award. It has led 10 and participated in over 10 national multicenter clinical studies, authored 2 and contributed to over 10 national guidelines and expert consensus on biliary diseases. The department has edited or participated in the compilation of over 10 textbooks and monographs, and published over 300 papers in domestic and international journals, including over 100 SCI articles. It holds 3 invention patents, 2 software copyrights (successfully commercialized), and 19 utility model patents. The department has also trained dozens of doctoral and master's students for the hospital and other institutions nationwide.
