General Practice (Family Medicine) is a comprehensive medical specialty (comprehensive secondary clinical discipline) that integrates clinical medicine, preventive medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and humanities and social sciences.
**High-Level Platform for General Practice Discipline Development**
The Department of General Practice at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University was approved as one of the first batch of standardized training bases for general practice specialists in Guangdong Province in 2010, as one of the first batch of national standardized residency training bases for general practice in 2013, and was rated as a national key professional base for standardized residency training (General Practice) and one of the nine national excellent standardized residency training bases for general practice in 2020. It serves as a training base for general and core faculty in general practice for standardized residency training in Guangdong Province and is the host institution for leading talents in general practice in Guangdong Province.
The department is a key clinical specialty of Guangzhou Medical University and a master's degree-granting point for general practice. It is the lead unit of the core expert group for the clinical practice ability assessment at the conclusion of general practice residency training in Guangdong Province and is the designated assessment base (the only one in the province) for the clinical practice ability assessment at the conclusion of general practice residency training by the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission and the Guangdong Medical Doctor Association, coordinating and organizing clinical practice ability assessments at various examination sites across the province.
The department took the lead in establishing the "General Practice Specialty Alliance" in Guangdong Province, signing specialty alliance agreements with multiple renowned general hospitals and high-quality primary healthcare service centers, and comprehensively carrying out medical, educational, research, and nursing work.
**Building High Ground, Strengthening Primary Care, Promoting Health, and Coordinating Medical, Educational, and Research Development**
The Department of General Practice fully utilizes the hospital's high-level discipline cluster platform, guided by national and provincial key clinical disciplines, and emphasizes the coordinated development of medical care, education, and research. With the discipline development philosophy of "building high ground, strengthening primary care, promoting health, and coordinating medical, educational, and research development," the department continuously improves the construction of the general practice discipline, driving and enhancing the level of primary healthcare services in the region.
In terms of medical care, the department independently operates general practice outpatient clinics and general practice wards, establishes a multidisciplinary team (MDT) center, and provides continuous and comprehensive MDT-based general practice diagnostic and treatment services. It has developed advantages and characteristics in the diagnosis and treatment of "undifferentiated diseases," "comprehensive management of multiple chronic diseases," and "rehabilitation of chronic diseases." It has created a new general practice diagnosis and treatment model of "multidisciplinary collaboration, equal emphasis on prevention and treatment, and whole-process management," integrating disease prevention, health management, psychological assessment, high-quality general practice nursing, and intelligent continuous nursing. The department leads the "General Practice Specialty Alliance" with 6 general hospitals and 13 primary hospitals in the region, facilitating a green channel for "two-way referral" and promoting appropriate technologies. It has formed a "close-knit medical alliance" with Shiqiao Hospital in Panyu District, Guangzhou, assisting Shiqiao Hospital in establishing a general practice department and exploring new models for the development of close-knit medical alliance disciplines.
In terms of education, the department has established a General Practice Teaching and Research Office, conducting multi-level and multi-dimensional teaching activities, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at medical schools, standardized residency training, faculty training, general practitioner job training (transfer training), specialist nurse training, and continuing medical education after graduation.
In terms of research, the department carries out multiple general practice research projects, collaborating with higher medical schools and primary healthcare institutions to explore new models for general practice research, medical education reform, and innovative faculty training.
**Excellent General Practice Discipline Team**
The department has a complete medical and nursing team, including 8 clinicians, 2 master's supervisors, 1 with senior professional title, 4 with associate senior professional titles, 2 with intermediate professional titles, and 1 with junior professional title. Among them, 1 holds a doctoral degree, 4 hold master's degrees, and 3 hold bachelor's degrees. There are 14 nurses, including 1 associate chief nurse, 4 nurse supervisors, 8 senior nurses, and 1 nurse, with 2 holding master's degrees, 10 holding bachelor's degrees, and 2 holding associate degrees.
Since its establishment, the department has played a leading role as a national key professional base for general practice residency training and a key clinical specialty of Guangzhou Medical University. It has formed a "close-knit medical alliance" with Shiqiao Hospital in Panyu District, dispatching academic leaders in general practice to establish a general practice department there. At the same time, it has signed agreements with multiple high-quality community health service centers to establish the "General Practice Specialty Alliance" and "Collaborative General Practice Residency Training Primary Practice Bases," implementing comprehensive medical technology guidance, facilitating a green channel for "two-way referral," highlighting the comprehensive, continuous, and coordinated characteristics of general practice medical care, enhancing the level of primary medical care, education, and research, and providing multi-dimensional general practice comprehensive services including prevention, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, education, and rehabilitation.
