The Obstetrics Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University is a secondary discipline under the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. It integrates clinical medical care, scientific research, and teaching, forming a modern medical specialty of considerable scale. Based on routine obstetric clinical practice, it undertakes the treatment of pregnant women with complex, difficult, and critical conditions arising from or complicating pregnancy. It maintains high medical quality and professional service standards, possesses a well-established academic team, balanced disciplinary development, and well-equipped laboratories. The department is equipped with one fully equipped companion delivery room, one standard delivery room, and one isolation delivery room, along with 37 inpatient beds. Additionally, it features a general obstetric outpatient clinic, a high-risk obstetric outpatient clinic, a genetic counseling clinic, a postpartum pelvic floor rehabilitation treatment center, a prenatal diagnosis laboratory (including a cytogenetics unit, a biochemical immunology unit, and a molecular genetics unit), and a prenatal ultrasound diagnosis unit. The professional groups are divided into: the physiological obstetrics group, the pathological obstetrics group, and the prenatal diagnosis group. High-risk pregnancy cases account for over 70% of admissions. Both the obstetric ward and outpatient clinic are equipped with advanced fetal central monitoring systems, capable of meeting the needs for fetal heart rate monitoring in late pregnancy and throughout the entire delivery process, ensuring the safety of both mother and infant. There are warm family delivery rooms available, allowing family members to accompany the delivery and providing "one-on-one" doula delivery services. Delivery pain relief techniques are implemented, significantly alleviating the pain of uterine contractions during labor; meanwhile, free-position delivery is also practiced. This allows pregnant women to experience a comfortable delivery comprehensively and increases the success rate of vaginal delivery. The ward is equipped with various rehabilitation therapy instruments, and the postpartum pelvic floor rehabilitation treatment center effectively assists in postpartum recovery. The bright and warm newborn bathing and touch room located in the obstetric ward meets the daily care needs of newborns. Our department fully leverages the hospital's overall strength to treat pregnant women with complex, difficult, and critical conditions, as well as to manage the treatment of critically ill pregnant women referred from lower-level hospitals. The diagnosis and treatment of pregnancy complicated by respiratory system diseases and pregnancy complicated by urinary system diseases are the professional specialties and strengths of the department. The treatment level in these areas is at the leading level in Guangdong Province, with the treatment of pregnancy complicated by respiratory system diseases being at the national leading level. The screening, diagnosis, management, and treatment of common conditions such as pregnancy complicated by diabetes, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, pregnancy complicated by thyroid diseases, and pregnancy complicated by embolic diseases have shown significant results. Reducing birth defects is an important goal of obstetric work. To minimize birth defects, our department monitors embryos and fetuses from early pregnancy, conducting screening and diagnosis for birth defects, and performing high-resolution ultrasound examinations to identify fetal structural abnormalities. Our department is one of the early institutions in Guangzhou to implement prenatal diagnosis techniques, establishing complete methods for fetal specimen collection and intrauterine treatment, including chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, cordocentesis, amnioinfusion, rapid amnioreduction, and multifetal pregnancy reduction. It is equipped with an advanced prenatal diagnosis laboratory capable of performing chromosome culture and karyotype analysis on chorionic villi, amniotic fluid, cord blood, and peripheral blood, as well as genetic testing for single-gene diseases such as thalassemia and deafness. The department undertakes the free prenatal screening and free prenatal diagnosis projects in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou. The obstetric medical and nursing team includes 2 doctors with doctoral degrees, several with master's degrees, 6 with senior professional titles, 2 master's supervisors, 2 chief physicians, and 4 deputy chief physicians. They undertake multiple provincial and municipal scientific research projects, including the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation, and have published dozens of scientific research papers, with nearly 10 included in SCI.
