The Department of Hematology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University integrates clinical practice, teaching, scientific research, and management. It is part of the internal medicine system affiliated with the National Key Discipline of the Ministry of Education. Established over 50 years ago, the department has achieved rapid development through the relentless efforts of generations of hematologists, particularly under the leadership of Professor Tan Huo in the past two decades. It has become a Key Clinical Specialty of Guangdong Province (2011), an Accredited Unit for Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Guangdong Province (2007), a Drug Clinical Trial Base (re-applied and approved in 2019), a Doctoral Degree Authorization Discipline in Hematology (2020), and a Postdoctoral Research Station in Internal Medicine. It ranks 8th in the Guangdong Province DRG Discipline Construction Evaluation. The department currently has 44 staff members, including 12 medical technicians, 4 teaching and research personnel, 25 nursing staff, 2 visiting professors, and 1 postdoctoral fellow. Among them, 12 hold senior professional titles, 8 hold intermediate titles, 8 have doctoral degrees, and 7 have master's degrees. The department operates 44 general beds, 3 laminar flow transplant rooms, and 10 simplified laminar flow beds. In clinical treatment, the department boasts a highly skilled and well-structured team led by Chief Mentor Tan Huo and Discipline Leader Huang Zhenqian. It has achieved significant results in the diagnosis and treatment of leukemia, lymphoma, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, red blood cell disorders, bleeding and coagulation disorders, and hematological tumor biotherapy. Notably, research in individualized diagnosis and treatment of T-cell lymphoma, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for solid tumors, haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary fungal infections post-chemotherapy, management of post-transplant pulmonary complications, monitoring of minimal residual disease in leukemia, prevention and treatment of tumor thrombosis, chronic disease anemia, biobank of hematological tumors in Southern Chinese populations and individualized prognosis, and multicenter international drug clinical trials for hematological diseases has received acclaim from domestic and international experts. In teaching and research, the department actively fosters talent development and increases investment in infrastructure. It has established a hematological tumor specimen bank and a lymphoma database. Leveraging the department's laboratory and the hospital's national and provincial key laboratories, it has built a comprehensive scientific research experimental system. Additionally, it has set up a postdoctoral research station and flexibly introduced high-end external talents to continuously enhance the discipline's academic influence domestically and internationally. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the department published 34 SCI-indexed papers with a total impact factor of 91.56, obtained 1 utility model patent, secured 5 national-level projects and 8 provincial/municipal-level projects, with total research funding of 2.67 million RMB.
