Department Details
The Department of Endocrinology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University was established in 1976, under the leadership of Professor Cai Rusen, a renowned endocrinology expert in Guangdong Province. In 1990, the endocrinology specialty was formally established with 16 beds, independently conducting diagnosis and treatment of endocrine diseases, as well as laboratory tests related to diabetes, thyroid, adrenal, gonadal, and pituitary disorders. In 2002, endocrinology became an independent tertiary discipline, with Chen Guangyuan serving as the director of endocrinology. The department had 18 beds, with 1 chief physician, 2 attending physicians, and 3 resident physicians, including 1 doctor and 3 with master's degrees. It offered specialist clinics for experts, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and obesity. In 2009, Chen Xiaoyan succeeded as the academic leader of endocrinology. After more than 10 years of accumulation and development, the department now has 10 physicians, including 1 professor, 4 chief physicians, 1 associate chief physician, and 4 attending physicians; 4 hold doctoral degrees, 4 hold master's degrees, and 1 is a master's supervisor.
The Department of Endocrinology is unique in areas such as early reversal treatment of diabetes, comprehensive management of obesity, integrated remote management of hyperglycemia both in and out of the hospital, early diagnosis and treatment of thyroid nodules, early diagnosis and treatment of bone metabolism abnormalities, comprehensive management of steroid-induced endocrine diseases, and multidisciplinary diabetes health education. In recent years, the department has introduced fine-needle aspiration liquid-based cytology for assessing thyroid nodule characteristics, filling a gap in the hospital and significantly improving diagnostic accuracy. It has also pioneered remote management in blood glucose control both in and out of the hospital.
In terms of education, the endocrinology teaching team is part of the "National Advanced Collective in the Education System (Nanshan College Teaching Team of Guangzhou Medical University)" and is responsible for the endocrine module teaching at Nanshan College. Additionally, the department undertakes endocrine lectures for Guangzhou Medical University, clinical internships, specialized teaching, and intern instruction, as well as training and advanced study programs for physicians from various hospitals in Guangzhou and some other provinces and cities. It also provides training for general practitioners transitioning to specialist roles and community physician professional training in Guangdong Province, having trained over a hundred endocrinology specialists and internal medicine rotating physicians.
In research, the department focuses on clinical studies of common endocrine and metabolic diseases and their relationships with other clinical specialties. Over the past decade, it has undertaken and participated in 1 National Natural Science Foundation of China general project, 1 project from the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education, over 10 provincial and departmental projects, over 10 municipal and departmental projects, and over 10 college-level projects. It has published over 100 papers in domestic and international journals and passed the national drug clinical trial qualification assessment in August 2019.
In March 2008, a multidisciplinary "Diabetes Education Club" was established, with core members from endocrinology, nutrition, ophthalmology, integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, cardiology, and psychology departments. The club conducts lectures on psychological coping, dietary adjustments, exercise therapy, medication treatment, complication prevention and management, daily home self-care, blood glucose monitoring, and treatment advancements. To date, the "Diabetes Education Club" has held over 200 lectures, with over 700 registered members, creating significant social benefits.
