The Department of Geriatrics at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University was established in 1992. It is a comprehensive discipline integrating clinical practice, teaching, scientific research, and chronic disease management. It also serves as one of the cadre health care ward bases of the Guangzhou Municipal Health Care Committee, undertaking health care responsibilities for national, provincial, and municipal-level leading cadres. The department specializes in comprehensive management of chronic diseases and health check-ups for middle-aged and elderly individuals. Adhering to the spirit of keeping pace with the times, it actively develops a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment platform featuring sub-specialty directions such as cardiovascular and endocrine chronic disease management, prevention and rehabilitation of chronic respiratory diseases, and assessment and rehabilitation of geriatric dysphagia. The geriatric ward is positioned at a mid-to-high-end level, with significant annual investment from governments at all levels and the hospital. The disciplinary team has a well-structured composition and has consistently maintained a record of zero-complaint medical care and high-quality geriatric nursing. Its specialized setup and diagnostic and treatment capabilities have reached an advanced level within the city. In 2021, the department added the Dongsheng Cooperative Hospital District (formerly the Geriatric Rehabilitation Hospital) of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, which operates under unified management and standards with the main hospital. The department currently has 20 medical staff, including 1 chief physician, 2 deputy chief physicians, 2 attending physicians (among whom 4 are members of provincial academic committees), 1 doctor with a Ph.D., 3 with master's degrees, and 15 nurses. The discipline's development is supported by the National Respiratory Center, fully leveraging the advantages of respiratory medicine, with a focus on the sub-specialty directions of cardiovascular metabolic medicine and prevention and treatment of geriatric respiratory diseases. Relying on the hospital's advantageous disciplines and grounded in clinical practice, the department carries out prevention and rehabilitation of chronic respiratory diseases, assessment and rehabilitation of geriatric dysphagia, chronic disease management of cardiovascular and endocrine conditions, and malnutrition management. In terms of scientific research, all department members actively apply for national, provincial, and municipal research projects, with several members participating in national and provincial projects and publishing multiple SCI articles. In education, the department undertakes teaching tasks for standardized residency training, interns, and visiting physicians, with 4 physicians qualified as residency training mentors. The academic atmosphere is harmonious and collaborative. The department is a training base for geriatric specialist nurses and nutrition specialists in Guangdong Province, offering specialized nursing in geriatrics, nutrition, and diabetes. It provides patient, attentive, and considerate high-quality nursing services to elderly patients, earning the title of Excellent Nursing Team multiple times and receiving consistent praise from patients.
