Department Details
【Department Introduction】
The Department of Nephrology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University was established in the early 1980s. It is a specialized department integrating clinical practice, teaching, and scientific research. The department primarily consists of general wards, a blood purification unit, and outpatient clinics. It is equipped with a total of 20 hemodialysis machines and CRRT machines, capable of diagnosing and treating various common and complex nephrological conditions. The department performs techniques such as renal biopsy, hemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis. The nephrology team comprises 13 specialist physicians, including 2 professors and chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, 2 attending physicians, 6 resident physicians, 2 doctors of medicine, 6 masters of medicine, and 1 master's supervisor.
【Specialized Techniques】
The nephrology ward has 28 beds, primarily admitting patients with: primary glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, various secondary glomerular diseases such as lupus nephritis, hypertensive nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, gouty nephropathy, urinary tract infections (including acute and chronic pyelonephritis, cystitis), interstitial nephritis, renal tubular diseases, acute/chronic renal failure due to various causes, and poisoning from drugs and toxins. The department performs ultrasound-guided renal biopsy, which has become a routine examination item, significantly improving the diagnostic and therapeutic levels and research capabilities in nephrology.
The blood purification unit is equipped with various advanced international blood purification devices and routinely performs multiple blood purification techniques, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, hemofiltration, plasma exchange, hemoperfusion, and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Hemofiltration and hemoperfusion for treating late-stage complications of uremia have become specialties, achieving favorable clinical outcomes and research progress; CRRT treatment has improved the success rate in rescuing patients with multiple organ failure.
【Education and Research】
In terms of scientific research, the department has secured 6 provincial and municipal-level research projects in recent years and has published dozens of research, clinical, and teaching papers in core journals. In terms of education, as a clinical teaching specialty in internal medicine, the department participates annually in delivering lectures on diagnostics and internal medicine, guiding over 50 internal medicine interns and 2-3 master's students, while also accepting multiple visiting physicians from within and outside the province.
【Nursing Work】
In this discipline, over 90% of the nursing staff hold associate degrees or higher. They serve patients with patience, meticulousness, and professionalism, adopting a "comprehensive nursing model." Through sincere, family-style communication and professional health education guidance, they have earned the trust and praise of numerous nephrology patients.
