The Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University is a National Demonstration Unit for TCM Work in Comprehensive Hospitals and a Key Specialty of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM Pulmonary Disease Specialty). Led by academic leaders Wang Xinhua and Qiu Zhinan, and supported by the National Key Discipline of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Clinical Discipline of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine), it collaborates closely with the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health, establishing itself as a major clinical, teaching, and research base for TCM and integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine in South China. The TCM Department currently has over 60 medical staff. It includes 2 Guangdong Provincial Famous TCM Practitioners (Qiu Zhinan, Pan Junhui), 1 Guangzhou Municipal Famous TCM Practitioner (Yang Qunyu), 1 National TCM Innovation Backbone (Xia Xinhua), 2 National Outstanding TCM Clinical Talents (Zhang Zhimin, Fan Ping), 3 National Academic Experience Mentors for Senior TCM Experts with 12 successors, 8 Guangdong Provincial Outstanding Young Medical Talents, and 15 Guangzhou Municipal Outstanding TCM Clinical Talents. Among the current employees, there are 13 with senior professional titles, 10 with associate senior titles, 14 with doctoral degrees, and 12 with master's degrees. There are 7 doctoral supervisors and 15 master's supervisors in integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. The TCM Department consists of outpatient clinics, an integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine ward, a Traditional Therapy Center, and a Preventive Treatment Center, located across the Datansha Campus, Yanjiang Campus, Yanjiang Campus Comprehensive Building (National Respiratory Medicine Center), and Dongsheng Campus. Outpatient clinics are divided into TCM internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, orthopedics, etc. The integrated ward focuses on respiratory diseases and rehabilitation using integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. The Traditional Therapy Center emphasizes respiratory rehabilitation and osteoarticular diseases. The Preventive Treatment Center targets respiratory diseases, sub-health conditions, and various lifestyle diseases in adults; respiratory, digestive, and developmental disorders in children; and menstrual regulation, fertility support, and postpartum conditions in gynecology. Relying on various levels of studio construction and national, provincial, and municipal talent programs, the TCM Department takes respiratory diseases as a flagship, strengthening its role as a National Demonstration Unit for TCM Work in Comprehensive Hospitals. It develops, summarizes, and optimizes TCM characteristic therapies, highlighting the unique features and advantages of TCM in clinical treatment to improve efficacy. Currently, the specialty offers over 10 TCM characteristic therapies, including body acupuncture, Longsha Six-Qi acupuncture, ear acupuncture, acupoint application, tuina massage, cupping, thunder-fire moxibustion, and acupoint medium-frequency therapy. These therapies are simple to perform, effective, and well-received by patients. In terms of scientific education, relying on the Institute of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine of Guangzhou Medical University, the department's main research directions include respiratory diseases, infertility, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, geriatric diseases, and immune system diseases in integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. Recent scientific achievements are abundant. Since 2012, it has obtained 14 National Natural Science Foundation projects and 21 provincial and municipal projects. Current research funding exceeds 3 million RMB, with over 100 published articles, including 31 SCI papers. Additionally, it undertakes teaching of basic and classical courses for the Clinical Medicine in Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine program (Guangdong Provincial First-Class Program) at Guangzhou Medical University, as well as the "Traditional Chinese Medicine" course for the Clinical Medicine program (National First-Class Program) at Nanshan College and the First Clinical College. In recent years, it has won one first prize in Guangdong Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards and multiple university-level teaching achievement awards. It has edited two national-level English textbooks on "Traditional Chinese Medicine" (published by People's Medical Publishing House and Science and Technology Press), co-edited several textbooks, and published multiple monographs.
