The Department of Dermatology has been established for over 30 years, undertaking responsibilities in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, scientific research, and teaching of skin and sexually transmitted diseases. It boasts extensive teaching and clinical experience with strong technical expertise. Currently, the department includes 4 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, and 3 resident physicians, among whom 1 holds a doctoral degree and 3 hold master's degrees; additionally, there are 2 nursing specialists and 1 technician. In the past five years, the department has received multiple grants from the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation Program and the Guangzhou Municipal Science and Technology Program, has been awarded at the provincial and ministerial levels, and has published numerous papers and edited several monographs. The discipline is equipped with advanced medical facilities, including a dermatology ward dedicated to treating critically ill and complex patients. It features specialized clinics for alopecia, sexually transmitted diseases, fungal diseases, nail diseases, pigmentation disorders, pediatric dermatology, and connective tissue diseases, with a laser cosmetic clinic soon to be launched. Current major services include: diagnosis and treatment of various complex skin diseases and sexually transmitted diseases; laser, high-frequency electrocautery, and cryotherapy for skin growths and pigmented nevi; high-pressure injector therapy for scars, alopecia areata, prurigo nodularis, and hypertrophic skin conditions; comprehensive alopecia treatment; fungal laboratory testing and hair structure examination; and common allergen testing. The Alopecia Specialty Clinic is a hallmark of our hospital, established in 1988 under the guidance of Academician Zhong Nanshan and led by Director Hou Xianzeng, making our hospital the first to offer a dedicated alopecia clinic. After more than 20 years of effort, it has gained considerable reputation both within the province and nationwide, having treated over 300,000 alopecia patients and preserved more than 10,000 alopecia medical records. This specialty has developed a set of diagnostic and therapeutic methods for alopecia, enabling the majority of patients to recover. Its clinical and research capabilities have reached a leading level within the province. It pioneered autologous single-hair transplantation in the province, was the first in China to use finasteride for the treatment of male pattern alopecia (MPA), first reported monilethrix involving all body hair, and reported the hair-nose-finger (toe) syndrome. It was also the first in China to report that low-power CO2 laser irradiation significantly promotes hair growth in alopecia guinea pigs, developed a helmet-type dual-wavelength laser hair growth device for alopecia treatment, and was the first to conduct hair structure examinations. The project "Basic and Clinical Treatment Research on Alopecia" won third prize for scientific and technological progress at the provincial and municipal levels. The department compiled and published the "Color Atlas of Hair and Scalp Disease Diagnosis and Treatment." It has disseminated its research findings and clinical application experience through special lectures, academic seminars, and "Alopecia Treatment Training Courses," training a number of technical personnel for the province and beyond.
