The predecessor of the Ophthalmology Department of Guangzhou Medical University was the Otolaryngology and Ophthalmology Clinic established in March 1951. After the hospital formally became an affiliated hospital of Guangzhou Medical College in 1974, the Ophthalmology Department was officially established as an independent clinical department. The department subsequently grew and developed. By 1996, it had formed a specialized team of 21 medical staff, including 14 physicians, capable of undertaking medical, teaching, and research tasks. Around 2010, the department began to successively recruit 10 high-level talents, including masters and doctors, and dispatched 3 individuals for visiting studies in the United States. In 2012, it started enrolling master's degree students. Since 2015, the Ophthalmology Department entered a period of rapid development, with equipment upgrades, expanded facilities, leapfrog growth in advantageous specialties, and a surge in both the quality and quantity of services. In 2016, it successfully applied to become a standardized training base for ophthalmology, beginning systematic training for resident physicians in ophthalmology. Currently, our hospital's Ophthalmology Department has a relatively comprehensive range of subspecialties, including: Cataract Department, Fundus Internal Medicine Department, Fundus Surgery Department, Glaucoma Department, Dry Eye Disease Department, Refractive Surgery Department, Corneal Disease Department, Strabismus and Amblyopia Specialty, Oculoplastic Surgery Department, and Orbital Disease Department. These provide comprehensive ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment services for a wide range of patients, offering various domestically advanced surgical treatments. This has achieved a favorable situation where major specialties such as cataracts, fundus diseases, refractive surgery, and oculoplastic surgery advance together, while other specialties develop rapidly. The department has gradually formed specialized features in vitreoretinal surgery, phacoemulsification combined with intraocular lens implantation, and excimer laser treatment for myopia. In 2017, Professor Cheng Hao pioneered the application of premium intraocular lenses, such as toric and multifocal IOLs, in cataract surgery within our department, effectively addressing presbyopia and astigmatism while meeting patients' needs for both distance and near vision. This significantly improved patients' visual quality, enabling them not only to see but to see clearly. Additionally, the department performs high-difficulty cataract surgeries, such as those for extremely high myopia, "watery eyes," single-eyed patients, and completely white, ultra-hard nuclei, all achieving favorable outcomes. These achievements have been reported multiple times by media outlets such as *Laoren Bao* (Elderly Newspaper) and *Guangzhou Television*. Currently, our department boasts a highly competent ophthalmology team, including 1 professor, chief physician, and doctoral supervisor; 3 associate chief physicians; 3 senior attending physicians; 4 doctors with doctoral degrees; and several resident physicians. Our equipment is among the top-tier in the domestic ophthalmology field. We possess numerous internationally leading diagnostic and surgical devices, including: the Verion intraoperative dynamic navigation system, Heidelberg OCT, TOPCON fundus imaging system, Canon non-contact tonometer, TOPCON refractometer, TOPCON endothelial cell microscope, Optos ultra-widefield multi-wavelength color laser scanning ophthalmoscope, OQAS visual quality analysis system, Pentacam (the gold standard for anterior segment tomography), Itrace, and dry eye analyzer, among others. These play a pivotal role in the widespread adoption of premium intraocular lenses, the diagnosis and treatment of fundus diseases and dry eye, and comprehensive visual quality analysis, greatly enhancing the diagnostic accuracy of clinicians and leading the ophthalmology department into a new era of high visual quality. In terms of scientific research, since 2003, the Ophthalmology Department has received funding for 6 projects at various levels: including 3 from the Guangdong Science and Technology Plan, 1 from the Guangdong Provincial Health Department, and 1 each from the hospital and college. Currently, 2 provincial and ministerial-level projects are under research, and 3 have been completed. Nearly 20 academic papers have been published, including 1 indexed in SCI and 5 in domestic core journals. In 2014, Professor Cheng Hao obtained funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Natural Science Foundation. Also in 2014, he received funding from the Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology's Public Welfare and Capacity Building Research Fund. In 2021, the department received funding from the Guangzhou Municipal Science and Technology Bureau's City-University Joint Project Fund. Additionally, to promote and popularize advanced ophthalmic clinical diagnostic and treatment technologies, our department has hosted the Guangzhou Medical University Continuing Education Project—the *Nanshan Ophthalmology Forum*—annually since 2015, which has been held for six consecutive sessions. In education, the Ophthalmology Department undertakes multi-level teaching for Guangzhou Medical University's clinical medicine undergraduates and graduate students, offering theoretical lectures in *Ophthalmology* and clinical internship guidance, with an average annual teaching workload of over 300 hours. Professor Cheng Hao has been enrolling master's degree students since 2012, and has now supervised 9 consecutive cohorts. Among them, 9 graduate students have completed their studies and entered the workforce, while 4 are currently enrolled. In 2017, the department was approved as a standardized training base for ophthalmology residents, with Professor Cheng Hao serving as the base director. He also participated in the compilation of the national higher medical undergraduate textbook *Ophthalmology* for integrated Chinese and Western medicine, responsible for the orbital disease chapter. Additionally, he contributed to 4 monographs, including *Animal Models of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Diseases*, *Ophthalmology: Basics and Clinical Practice*, *Prevention and Treatment of Pediatric Eye Diseases*, and *Extraocular Muscle Diseases*. **Departmental Honors:** 1. Awarded the "Excellence Award" for medical quality work in 2021. 2. In 2019, Professor Cheng Hao received the "Outstanding Party Affairs Worker" award. 3. In 2018, Dr. Yang Ye won the first prize in the hospital-wide young faculty Chinese teaching competition and the Excellence Award in the Guangzhou Medical University teaching competition. 4. In 2019, Liu Yalu won the third prize in the Chinese teaching competition organized by the Nursing Department. 5. In 2019, Dr. Zeng Yuying won the first prize in the resident physician medical record reporting competition.
