Department Details

The Department of Stomatology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University was established at the founding of the hospital. Through the efforts of several generations, it has developed into a specialized department integrating teaching, research, and clinical practice. The department currently has 13 physicians, including 3 professors/chief physicians (including 2 master's supervisors), 4 associate chief physicians, 3 attending physicians, and 3 resident physicians. Among them, there is 1 postdoctoral fellow, 3 doctors, and 7 masters, forming a specialized team capable of undertaking medical, teaching, and research tasks. The Department of Stomatology is currently equipped with advanced dental CBCT digital imaging systems, digital intraoral X-ray machines, digital intraoral scanners, periodontal therapy devices, nickel-titanium rotary root canal systems, high-frequency electrosurgical units, dental implant machines, and ultrasonic bone knives. Its scope of practice covers all specialties of stomatology, including oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, implant and prosthodontics, oral mucosal diseases, and preventive dentistry, making it a department with comprehensive specialties and high overall capability. Oral medicine provides treatments for dental caries and pulp diseases, periapical diseases, periodontal diseases, and oral mucosal diseases. The orthodontics department uses the most advanced orthodontic techniques to correct various types of malocclusion, including pre- and post-surgical orthodontic treatment for orthognathic surgery. The oral and maxillofacial surgery department primarily diagnoses and treats various benign and malignant tumors, inflammations, and traumas of the maxillofacial region; salivary gland diseases such as those of the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands; congenital deformities such as cleft lip and palate and maxillofacial bone deformities; temporomandibular joint disorders; and neurological conditions such as facial paralysis and trigeminal neuralgia. Some procedures, such as digital titanium plate rigid internal fixation for jaw fractures and titanium mesh implantation for jaw reconstruction to repair jaw defects and deformities, have reached advanced domestic levels. The implant and prosthodontics department primarily provides fixed prostheses, removable prostheses, complete dentures, aesthetic anterior restorations, and implant-supported prostheses. The department has introduced internationally renowned implant systems such as ITI (Switzerland) and Ankylos (Germany). Since pioneering the introduction of dental implant technology in provincial general hospitals in 2006, the department has consistently led in the volume of implant surgeries and related procedures. For adult snoring (sleep apnea), the department uses a uniquely designed dual-jaw snoring device, achieving favorable therapeutic outcomes. In terms of education and research, the Department of Stomatology's teaching office has long been responsible for theoretical lectures, clinical observations, and internships for certain courses in stomatology and clinical medicine at Guangzhou Medical University, as well as clinical teaching for interns from other medical schools and training for visiting scholars from across the country. Since 2010, the department has accepted graduate students in stomatology from Guangzhou Medical University for internships. As of 2021, it has trained 23 master's students. It is also among the first batch of standardized residency training bases in Guangdong Province, having trained 28 residents who have completed the program and currently training 12 residents. In recent years, the department's medical staff have actively applied for research grants, undertaking several provincial, ministerial, and municipal-level projects and publishing over a dozen academic papers. Currently, multiple provincial-level research projects are underway, with main research directions aligned with international frontiers, and the department maintains close academic exchanges and collaborations with numerous medical schools both domestically and internationally.
