Department Details

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University was established in 1957 and was renamed the "Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery" in 2009. In 2016, the hospital approved the establishment of the "Laboratory of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery." It is currently a key clinical specialty in Guangdong Province and a component of the National Key Clinical Specialties in Oncology and Allergology. Additionally, it serves as a training site for master's and doctoral students in Otorhinolaryngology, a postdoctoral research station, a national endoscopic diagnosis and treatment training base, and a standardized residency training base in Guangdong Province. The Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery began performing nasal endoscopic surgery in 1993, making it one of the early adopters in China. It holds a leading domestic position in the diagnosis and treatment of sinusitis associated with asthma. The department has pioneered minimally invasive techniques for treating benign and malignant tumors of the skull base by modifying traditional surgical approaches and innovating surgical methods. It has safely and effectively conducted nasal endoscopic combined transfrontal approaches for the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant tumors such as inverted papilloma, olfactory neuroblastoma, and ethmoid sinus cancer. Excellent outcomes have been achieved in nasal endoscopic treatment of meningoencephalocele, cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, anterior skull base tumor resection, pituitary tumors, chordomas, craniopharyngiomas, optic nerve decompression, and dacryocystorhinostomy. Alongside ventilator selection and customized oral appliances, procedures such as uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, nasal septoplasty, turbinate reduction, tongue base ablation, and orthognathic surgery are aligned with international standards and lead the field in Guangdong Province. Under the leadership of Academician Zhong Nanshan, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery was the first in China to conduct sleep monitoring and provide both medical and surgical treatments for sleep disorders. It serves as the chair unit of the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Sleep Alliance." The department pioneered radiofrequency ablation for laryngeal cancer in Guangdong Province, significantly improving patients' quality of life while ensuring therapeutic efficacy. Early intratympanic injection for hearing loss and tinnitus, the Guangzhou-specific technique of "Tinnitus Sound Stimulation Non-invasive Neuromodulation Therapy," and the diagnosis and treatment of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease, chronic cough, and chronic pharyngitis are at the forefront domestically. Sequential treatment for pediatric tonsil and adenoid-related conditions, including sleep apnea, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anorexia, and "adenoid facies," is internationally leading. In recent years, the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery has led 9 National Natural Science Foundation projects and several provincial and municipal research projects, with annual research funding exceeding 8 million RMB. The department has edited or co-edited 10 textbooks and monographs, including "Animal Models of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery," the "13th Five-Year Plan" People's Medical Publishing House graduate textbook and English edition of "Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery," and the "14th Five-Year Plan" "Chinese Journal of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery." It has published over 80 papers in core domestic and international journals (including 4 with an impact factor >10), obtained more than 10 invention patents and over 20 utility model patents, and has hosted numerous national, provincial, and municipal academic conferences. Specialists in the department have frequently served as chairpersons or vice-chairpersons of provincial otorhinolaryngology-related societies and have published several teaching papers. The department was awarded the second prize in the 2020 Guangdong Province Otorhinolaryngology Standardized Residency Training Clinical Skills Competition.
