The Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University was established in 2003. It is a branch of the national key discipline of Oncology and a key clinical specialty of Guangdong Province. It also serves as a vice-chairman unit of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Branch of both the Guangdong and Guangzhou Medical Associations. Among them, 5 hold doctoral degrees, with 1 doctoral supervisor and 5 master's supervisors. **[Medical Care]** 1. **Routine Implementation of Standardized Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) for Gastrointestinal Tumors** Under the leadership of former directors Chief Physician Lei Jian and Chief Physician Huang Jiongqiang, and current director Professor Chen Jinsong, the department routinely implements standardized multidisciplinary team (MDT) for gastrointestinal tumors, based on the principles of standardized comprehensive treatment and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS). This provides comprehensive and personalized diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with gastrointestinal tumors. Since the initiation of MDT, the number of patients served has increased annually, with a significant rise in the proportion of complex and critically ill cases. In 2016, the department became one of the first national demonstration centers for advanced colorectal multidisciplinary treatment technology, and in 2019, it was selected as one of the first pilot hospitals for the National Health Commission's Spark Plan for Digestive System Tumor MDT. In 2021, the department was recognized as an excellent hospital for the pilot construction of digestive system tumor MDT. 2. **Distinctive Features of Minimally Invasive Surgery** The department handles over 15,000 outpatient visits annually, admits more than 3,000 inpatients each year, and performs nearly 2,000 surgeries annually, enjoying high social recognition. It has significant advantages in the surgical treatment of gastrointestinal tumor patients with severe cardiopulmonary diseases and in sphincter-preserving surgery for ultra-low rectal cancer, attracting patients from across the country. The department was one of the earliest in China to perform Natural Orifice Specimen Extraction Surgery (NOSES) for rectal cancer, with extensive experience in minimally invasive gastrointestinal tumor surgery and a strong reputation in the field of gastrointestinal surgery. The department routinely performs various complex and challenging laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, including pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure), radical distal gastrectomy, proximal gastrectomy, total gastrectomy, radical colorectal cancer resection, transanal total mesorectal excision, sphincter-preserving surgery for ultra-low rectal cancer, extended radical resection of gastrointestinal tumors with combined organ resection, pelvic exenteration, and lateral lymph node dissection. It also has extensive experience in minimally invasive surgery for abdominal wall and hernia surgery, as well as benign anorectal diseases. In recent years, the number of surgeries has increased annually, with a rising proportion of Grade IV surgeries and minimally invasive surgeries, while the average length of hospital stay has further decreased, achieving a dual optimization of patient outcomes and rapid recovery. 3. **Scope of Services** (1) Treatment of gastrointestinal tumors: covers minimally invasive surgical treatment of benign gastrointestinal and anal tumors, as well as malignant tumors such as gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, appendiceal cancer, duodenal cancer, small intestinal cancer, anal canal cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, and gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors. (2) Hernia and abdominal wall surgery: includes minimally invasive surgical treatment of inguinal hernia, femoral hernia, incisional hernia, parastomal hernia, hiatal hernia, diaphragmatic hernia, umbilical hernia, and abdominal wall tumors. (3) Surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and retroperitoneal tumors. (4) Benign anorectal diseases: surgical treatment of hemorrhoids, anal fistulas, perianal abscesses, and rectal prolapse. (5) Acute abdomen and gastrointestinal bleeding: surgical treatment of intestinal obstruction, acute appendicitis, gastrointestinal perforation, intestinal necrosis, and other acute abdominal conditions and gastrointestinal bleeding. (6) Bariatric and metabolic surgery: minimally invasive surgical treatment of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. **[Teaching]** The department is responsible for undergraduate education, master's and doctoral education, postdoctoral training, and international teaching.
