【Department Introduction】 The Department of Breast Surgery is a discipline integrating clinical practice, teaching, scientific research, and management. Since its establishment in 2007, it has grown rapidly and, after years of development, has gradually formed a distinctive industry-academia-research platform characterized by minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases and breast reconstruction. It is an authoritative center for breast disease diagnosis and treatment in Guangzhou and even Guangdong Province. The department is equipped with the most advanced domestic and international instruments and equipment, such as intraoperative radiotherapy for breast cancer, breast MRI, and mammography. It also boasts a large number of highly qualified and highly educated professional骨干, including one chief physician, one associate chief physician, one doctoral student, and four master's students. 【Academic Leader】 Zheng Wenbo, Associate Chief Physician, has been engaged in breast surgery for over 20 years. He serves as a member of the Guangdong Provincial Breast Cancer Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a member of the Guangzhou Branch of General Surgery of the Chinese Medical Association, and a member of the Breast Cancer Professional Committee of the Guangzhou Anti-Cancer Association. He has profound expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases, particularly with unique insights into individualized and comprehensive treatment of breast cancer. He pioneered the completion of endoscopic-assisted breast-conserving surgery for early and mid-stage breast cancer in South China (a technology currently at a leading domestic level). His team currently widely performs modified radical mastectomy, breast-conserving surgery (including endoscopic-assisted breast-conserving surgery), sentinel lymph node biopsy for breast cancer, stage I and II breast reconstruction, subcutaneous mastectomy with stage I reconstruction after injection augmentation mammoplasty, minimally invasive excision biopsy of breast masses (also known as Mammotome breast mass excision biopsy), ductoscopy for nipple discharge, excision of benign breast masses (including accessory breasts), and precise localization biopsy of small breast lesions, with some technologies at a leading domestic level. In recent years, Associate Chief Physician Zheng Wenbo has led multiple provincial and municipal research projects: 1. "Establishment of Human Breast Cancer Stem Cell Lines and Experimental Study of Retinoic Acid Intervention in Wnt-Regulated Differentiation" was approved by the Provincial Health Department in 2007. 2. "Study on the Expression and Significance of CCL18 in Plasma and Tissues of Breast Cancer Patients" was approved by the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Plan in 2010. "Study on Endoscopic-Assisted Breast-Conserving Surgery for Breast Cancer" was approved as a "One Department, One Innovative Medical Technology" project by Guangzhou Medical University in 2008. 3. In line with this trend, the department continuously develops and refines its specialized techniques: (1) Endoscopic-assisted breast-conserving surgery for early and mid-stage breast cancer; (2) Stage I and II reconstruction techniques after breast cancer surgery; (3) Subcutaneous mastectomy with stage I reconstruction after injection augmentation mammoplasty; (4) Mammotome excision biopsy of breast masses. Since 2006, the department has pioneered endoscopic-assisted breast-conserving surgery for early and mid-stage breast cancer in South China, completing over 100 cases to date. This surgical approach uses an endoscope via the axillary approach to excise the mass and perform lymph node dissection, reducing patient pain and preserving breast aesthetics postoperatively. Compared with modified radical mastectomy, endoscopic-assisted breast-conserving surgery results in less intraoperative blood loss, leaves only a 1 cm surgical incision, heals faster, and significantly shortens suture removal time and overall recovery time. Particularly as the wound heals and internal scar tissue forms, the breast achieves good aesthetic contouring, with patients expressing high satisfaction. Breast-conserving surgery has many advantages but is limited by factors such as the mass being too close to the nipple, excessive mass diameter, or conditions unsuitable for radiotherapy. Breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery serves as an alternative to preserve breast shape, meeting the needs of such patients. The department introduced stage I and II reconstruction techniques after breast cancer surgery, being one of the earliest specialties in China to adopt this technology, with significant influence in Guangdong Province. With the introduction of intraoperative radiotherapy for breast cancer, this technique has become more widely and safely applicable, bringing hope to countless patients who cannot undergo breast-conserving surgery, allowing them to avoid physical deformity and maintain confidence in their lives. Over the past 20 years, augmentation mammoplasty has become increasingly popular in China, with many beauty salons promoting injection augmentation. However, to date, no artificial liquid material has been approved by the state for injection into the breast. Common injection materials like "Ingelfa" (polyacrylamide hydrogel) can cause immune rejection reactions, leading to bodily harm such as infection, granuloma formation, and in severe cases, breast ulceration and carcinogenesis, especially when improperly injected. Such harmful artificial materials must be removed promptly to avoid serious consequences. Autologous fat injection augmentation appears safer but has poor aesthetic outcomes (breast size typically reduces by over half within two years and returns to baseline within four years), and the injected fat tissue often undergoes extensive necrosis, resulting in numerous masses and carcinoid-like calcifications throughout the breast. This condition requires timely intervention, sometimes necessitating reoperation. In 2005, the department pioneered Mammotome excision biopsy of breast masses in the province, performing thousands of procedures. Using the Mammotome vacuum-assisted minimally invasive breast biopsy system, this technique is not only safe and effective but also preserves excellent breast appearance for many women postoperatively. Features of Mammotome minimally invasive excision biopsy of breast tumors include: (1) Precise localization and accurate excision of lesions, allowing removal of multiple masses through a single incision with minimal damage to normal glandular tissue. (2) No surgical incision, resulting in excellent cosmetic outcomes. (3) Short procedure time, with single mass excision taking only 5 minutes. (4) Widely accepted by the public due to its numerous advantages. With increased breast mass biopsy rates, the diagnosis rate of carcinoma in situ has also risen significantly. In recent years, the breast center has diagnosed an average of over 10 cases of breast carcinoma in situ annually through Mammotome biopsy of suspicious proliferative nodules. 【Scientific Research】 The department is a national clinical drug trial institution approved by the Ministry of Health, undertaking and completing clinical research on new anticancer drugs nationwide, providing patients with the latest and most effective medications. Leveraging the hospital's national key laboratory platform, it has undertaken multiple provincial and municipal research projects, including those approved by the Provincial Health Department.
