The Department of Neurosurgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University was founded in the 1960s by Professor Cai Zhaoming, a renowned neurosurgeon in China, and is one of the earliest established neurosurgery departments in Guangzhou. It currently has 10 physicians, including 4 chief physicians, 2 deputy chief physicians, 2 attending physicians, and 2 resident physicians, with 3 holding doctoral degrees and 5 holding master's degrees. The team is characterized by strong clinical skills, robust research and teaching capabilities, and high medical ethics. The department is equipped with a range of advanced domestic and international surgical devices, including the Leica microscope (Germany), Medtronic power system, Medtronic navigation system, ultrasonic bone scalpel, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring instruments, STORZ neuroendoscope, and the Leksell stereotactic system (Sweden). The hospital also provides supporting high-end medical equipment such as 3.0T MR, DSA, PET-CT, and PET-MR.
Currently, the Department of Neurosurgery routinely performs various microscopic/endoscopic resections of intracranial and spinal canal tumors (especially meningiomas adjacent to major venous sinuses such as the superior sagittal sinus, transverse sinus, and sigmoid sinus, as well as complex skull base, brainstem, and deep brain tumors like those in the jugular foramen region), comprehensive treatment for various brain metastases (surgery combined with radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy), surgical procedures for cerebral ischemic diseases (such as bypass surgery for moyamoya disease and carotid endarterectomy for plaque stenosis), endovascular interventional procedures for hemorrhagic/ischemic neurological diseases (e.g., transcatheter intracranial aneurysm embolization, transcatheter intracranial arteriovenous malformation embolization, transcatheter dural arteriovenous fistula embolization), stereotactic deep brain stimulation (DBS), neuronavigation-guided stereotactic biopsy of deep brain lesions, microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm, shunt surgery for hydrocephalus and endoscopic third ventriculostomy, and endoscopic minimally invasive surgery for traumatic brain injury and intracerebral hemorrhage.
Over 45% of the surgical patients treated in the department come from 26 provinces or municipalities nationwide. The department has outstanding comparative advantages in the total resection of meningiomas invading major venous sinuses such as the superior sagittal sinus and transverse sinus, as well as surgeries for jugular foramen region tumors (e.g., schwannomas, glomus tumors), achieving top-tier levels both domestically and internationally. On January 18, 2026, CCTV-4's "Healthy China" program featured a special report on the department's technique for total resection of parasagittal meningiomas.
The current academic leader, Professor Xia Chengyu, is a top domestic expert in skull base tumors. He is a chief physician and holds a Doctor of Clinical Medicine degree (completed a combined master's and doctoral program at Huashan Hospital, Fudan University). He currently serves as a member of the 7th National Committee of the Neurosurgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and a member of its Skull Base Surgery Group, a member of the Skull Base Surgery Branch of the China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health Care, a national committee member of the Chinese Pituitary Adenoma Cooperative Group, a standing committee member of the Guangdong Neurosurgery Branch and a member of its Skull Base Surgery Group, and a deputy director of the Guangzhou Neurosurgery Physician Branch. He previously served as the chairman of the 2nd Committee of the Neurosurgery Physician Branch of the Anhui Medical Doctor Association, a youth committee member of the 8th Committee of the Neurosurgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and a national committee member of the 1st Committee of the Brain Glioma Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. He has been recognized as the 10th "Yangcheng Good Doctor," the first batch of Outstanding Health Talents in Anhui Province, and the 8th "Top Ten Outstanding Youth of Provincial Direct Units" in Anhui Province. He is a visiting scholar at the Mayo Clinic (USA), Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Ruhr University Bochum (Germany), and the University of Greifswald. He has been consecutively rated as "Annual Good Doctor (Neurosurgery)" on Haodf.com for nine years (2017-2025).
He has successfully operated on complex and difficult brain tumors from 26 provinces or municipalities, including Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Chongqing, Tianjin, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Yunnan, Shandong, Shanxi, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hebei, Guangxi, and Anhui.
Main areas of expertise:
1. Minimally invasive microsurgery for various intracranial and spinal canal tumors, including meningiomas, pituitary adenomas, trigeminal schwannomas, cholesteatomas (epidermoid cysts), acoustic neuromas, and gliomas, particularly complex and difficult brain surgeries involving skull base, brainstem, and deep brain lesions at various sites, such as jugular foramen region tumors, sellar region tumors (e.g., tuberculum sellae meningiomas, chordomas), petroclival meningiomas, pineal region tumors, foramen magnum region tumors, cavernous sinus region tumors, and brainstem hemangioblastomas.
2. Surgical procedures for cerebral ischemic diseases: direct and combined indirect bypass for moyamoya disease; carotid endarterectomy for plaque stenosis.
