Department Details
The Department of Spinal Surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University originated from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery of the same hospital, established in 1956. It is a key discipline in Guangdong Province, with doctoral and master's degree authorization points in orthopedic surgery and a postdoctoral research station. In 2013, the Guangzhou Orthopedic Research Institute was established, along with the formation of the Department of Spinal Surgery, with Dr. Liu Qi serving as the current department director.
The Department of Spinal Surgery specializes in minimally invasive spinal surgery, spinal deformity correction surgery, and spinal tumor surgery. Currently, the department has implemented procedures such as channel-assisted posterior lumbar decompression, transforaminal endoscopic techniques, MED, MIS-TLIF, MIS-PLIS, percutaneous pedicle screw-rod internal fixation, and other small-incision and minimally invasive spinal surgeries. These techniques effectively treat spinal diseases, reduce surgical trauma, shorten hospitalization time, and promote rapid functional recovery. Notably, the UBE (Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy) minimally invasive spinal surgery is a distinctive feature, gaining recognition within the province and even nationwide. Supported by research projects at the Ministry of Health, provincial, municipal, and institutional levels, the department has designed and developed a series of spinal minimally invasive implants, instruments, and tools, earning multiple national patents. It has established a research direction in spinal minimally invasive techniques and a series of characteristic minimally invasive spinal technologies.
In terms of research, the Department of Spinal Surgery is part of the Surgical Teaching and Research Office, undertaking teaching tasks for both undergraduate and master's students at Guangzhou Medical University. Over the years, it has cultivated a large number of outstanding graduates. Additionally, the department actively conducts research on cutting-edge spinal technologies, having undertaken more than ten provincial and municipal research projects, published over twenty papers in domestic and international journals, and obtained multiple national invention and utility model patents. It has also participated in numerous world-class orthopedic and spinal surgery academic conferences, delivering academic reports.
