The Department of Dermatology at Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University was established in 1963. It is currently a high-level clinical key dermatology specialty in Guangdong Province, a doctoral and master's degree authorization point, and a postdoctoral research station. It integrates comprehensive clinical diagnosis and treatment services including dermatology, sexually transmitted diseases, dermatologic surgery, laser cosmetic dermatology, and dermatopathology, and is a nationally renowned discipline with advanced comprehensive strength in South China, dedicated to the co-development and innovation of medical care, education, and research. It serves as a National Drug Clinical Trial Research Base, a National Dermatology Medical Aesthetics Demonstration Base of the Chinese Medical Association Dermatology and Venereology Branch, a member unit of the National Photodynamic Therapy Research Center of the Chinese Medical Association Dermatology and Venereology Branch, and a骨干 base for standardized residency training in dermatology under the Chinese Medical Doctor Association. The Department of Dermatology at Nanfang Hospital is distributed across three hospital areas (Main Campus, Zengcheng Campus, and Baiyun Campus), with a total area of over 5,000 square meters and 55 fixed beds. It includes a Photodynamic Therapy Center, a Laser Dermatology Treatment Center, a Sexually Transmitted Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, and a Lupus Erythematosus Diagnosis and Treatment Center, along with independent clinical laboratories for dermatology and sexually transmitted diseases, a dermatopathology laboratory, and a skin immunology laboratory. It has long been responsible for the treatment of severe and complex skin diseases in the South China region, operating multiple specialized clinics, including the Fungal Disease Demonstration Clinic of the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine Dermatology and Venereology Professional Committee and the Psoriasis Specialty Clinic of the Chinese Medical Association Dermatology and Venereology Branch. The annual outpatient volume is approximately 250,000 visits, and the annual inpatient volume exceeds 2,000 cases. The department currently has 87 active staff members, including 46 physicians, 19 with senior professional titles (10 professors/chief physicians, 6 associate chief physicians, 1 associate researcher, 2 associate chief nurses, and 19 attending physicians), 2 postdoctoral supervisors, 4 doctoral supervisors, 10 master's supervisors, and 13 individuals with overseas study experience in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. It has trained over 180 graduate students, including 61 doctoral students, 6 postdoctoral fellows, and 3 international students. In 2022, the department ranked among the top 19 nationally in the Chinese Hospital Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM), and second in Guangdong Province. In recent years, its comprehensive score for the quantity and quality of published papers ranked 27th nationally. It has led 17 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 4 projects funded by the National Postdoctoral Startup Fund, and over 40 provincial and ministerial-level projects, including key science and technology projects of Guangdong Province and the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation. It has also received multiple research awards, including 1 Second Prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Second Prize of the Military Medical Achievement Award, 1 Second Prize of the Guangzhou Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Third Prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, 3 Third Prizes of the Military Science and Technology Progress Award, 3 Third Prizes of the Military Medical Achievement Award, and 1 Third Prize of the Ministry of Health Science and Technology Progress Award. The department has published over 600 papers, including 179 SCI-indexed papers, edited 11 monographs, and obtained 36 patents (8 invention patents and 28 utility model patents). It has successfully hosted 4 large-scale national academic conferences, led the organization of the Central and South China Six-Province Dermatology and Venereology Academic Conference, the Annual Meeting of the Guangdong Medical Association Dermatology and Venereology Branch, and 6 national-level photodynamic therapy forums and training courses.
