The Department of Ophthalmology at Nanfang Hospital is a renowned center for ophthalmology education, research, and clinical practice in South China. It boasts exceptional medical expertise and comprehensive subspecialty coverage. The department serves as the host unit for the Vice Chairman of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Guangdong Medical Association and the Secretary-General of the National Oculoplastic Surgery Branch, and has been repeatedly recognized as one of the most influential specialized departments in South China. It is also an approved site for doctoral and master's degree programs in Ophthalmology by the Ministry of Education, and one of the first standardized residency training bases in Guangdong Province. The department currently includes the main hospital's specialized outpatient clinics, specialized wards, the Ophthalmology Section of the Huiqiao Medical Center, and the Zengcheng Branch Ophthalmology Department. The main hospital's Ophthalmology ward is designed with over 40 beds. The current staff includes 5 with senior professional titles, 3 with associate senior titles, 13 with intermediate titles, and 16 with junior titles, among whom 13 hold doctoral degrees and 7 hold master's degrees. Equipped with advanced domestic and international specialized instruments and equipment, the department is one of the earliest units in China to perform phacoemulsification cataract surgery, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, vitreoretinal surgery, and orbital and oculoplastic surgery. It specializes in surgical treatments for complex cataracts, congenital cataracts, refractory glaucoma, complex vitreoretinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, comprehensive reconstruction of ocular deformities, lacrimal and orbital diseases (including endoscopic transnasal microsurgery), orbital tumors, myopia in children and adolescents, strabismus and amblyopia, ptosis, and adult refractive errors.
