The Department of Infectious Diseases and Hepatology (Guangdong Provincial Institute of Liver Diseases) was established in 1951. Through the joint efforts of several generations of professionals in the field, it has now developed into a clinical and translational medicine platform for infectious diseases and liver diseases, integrating medical care, teaching, research, and prevention. It has long undertaken major national tasks in infectious disease prevention and treatment, healthcare, medical talent cultivation, and scientific research. Its disciplinary standing and comprehensive strength rank among the leading levels nationwide, with medical services rooted in South China, extending across the country, and reaching Southeast Asia and even the world. The department has an independent clinical building equipped with advanced facilities, including an intensive care unit, ultrasound room, and follow-up clinic. It forms a medical characteristic by combining clinical practice with scientific research, and clinical bases with laboratory testing. Currently, the department operates 165 specialized clinical beds, divided into three wards: the Complex Infection (Fever) Ward, the Liver Center Ward, and the Liver Tumor Ward. The annual outpatient volume is nearly 200,000 visits, with approximately 8,000 inpatient discharges. At present, the department serves as a treatment center for critically ill patients with infectious diseases, an expert alliance for AIDS-related lymphoma and a one-stop comprehensive service point for AIDS, and a base for the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial and fungal infections. It has achieved domestic leading levels in minimally invasive diagnosis and interventional treatment of cirrhotic portal hypertension, management of critical liver diseases, personalized diagnosis and treatment of fatty liver disease, and multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment of liver cancer. Looking ahead, the Department of Infectious Diseases at Nanfang Hospital will align with major national strategic needs, focus on first-class discipline construction, and extensively engage in international and domestic collaborations.
