Department Details

The Department of Burns at Nanfang Hospital was established in 1979. It became a master's degree authorization point in 1989 and a doctoral degree authorization point in 2002. In 1998, it was designated as a key discipline under the "Five Ones" Science and Education Revitalizing Medicine Project of Guangdong Province. In 2002, it became the Burn and Plastic Surgery Center of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). In 2007, it was recognized as a Guangdong Provincial Clinical Key Specialty and a Guangdong Provincial Clinical Physician Burn Specialist Training Base. In August 2018, the Outpatient Wound Treatment Center was established. The department pioneered burn air rescue in China and developed unique effective methods for preventing and treating wound fungal infections in hot and humid environments. It has successfully organized and participated in the treatment of dozens of batch large-area burn patients from within and outside the province, including the Shenzhen "8.5" major explosion, a fire on a missile frigate of the PLA Navy South Sea Fleet, the Guangzhou "6.29" oil tanker explosion, and the Chengdu "6.5" bus explosion. The overall treatment level for severe burns ranks among the top in China. The Department of Burns at Nanfang Hospital currently has 50 beds, with a scale ranking among the top in the province, and its patient base covers the South China region. The department is now divided into three subspecialties: Burns, Burn Scar Plastic Surgery, and Wound Repair, along with two nursing units and one wound treatment group. There are currently 38 medical, nursing, and technical staff members, including 16 medical staff (all with postgraduate degrees or above), 21 nursing staff (9 with bachelor's degrees, the rest with associate degrees), and 1 technical staff member. The department has 4 doctoral supervisors and 2 master's supervisors, capable of training 6-10 graduate students annually. As the first author unit, it has won 2 second-class awards for Military Science and Technology Progress and 1 third-class award for Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress. As a participant, it has received 1 first-class award for Military Medical Achievements and 2 second-class awards for National Science and Technology Progress. It has undertaken 15 provincial and ministerial-level research projects, obtaining over 2 million RMB in research funding. The department has published over 200 papers, including 4 in SCI journals, and contributed to more than 10 monographs. Over the years, the department has focused its clinical work and research on improving the cure rate, preventing and treating visceral complications, and enhancing patients' quality of life. A comprehensive set of treatment measures, including adequate fluid resuscitation under non-invasive monitoring, early tracheotomy with lavage and mechanical ventilation, extensive eschar excision with effective wound coverage, appropriate systemic nutritional support, and active support of organ function, has been integrated into the treatment process for large-area burns. The cure rate for burns covering >90% of the total body surface area (TBSA) with third-degree burns covering >70% TBSA reaches 91%, achieving a domestically advanced level. Functional plastic surgery after burns utilizes various methods such as different types of flaps, myocutaneous flaps, expander implantation, customizable stents, and pressure garments, combined with rehabilitation training at different stages, to significantly reduce the disability rate. In wound treatment, based on the distinct characteristics of injuries such as hot crush injuries, electrical burns, severe skin avulsion, skin tumor ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, and vascular ulcers, sequential treatment measures including ultrasonic atomization irrigation, surgical debridement, intermittent negative pressure wound therapy, application of medications and biological agents, and skin grafting or flap repair have been adopted, achieving favorable outcomes.
