The Kidney Transplantation Department of Nanfang Hospital performed its first kidney transplant in the 1970s and was established as an independent department in the 1990s. Through decades of arduous efforts and continuous progress, it has achieved fruitful results over more than 40 years. The department has 35 beds and a medical staff of 27. As of early 2020, it has completed over 4,000 cases of various kidney transplant surgeries, including kidney transplantation, liver transplantation, combined liver-kidney transplantation, combined pancreas-kidney transplantation, and combined liver-pancreas-duodenum transplantation. Currently, the department primarily performs kidney transplantation, combined liver-kidney transplantation, and combined pancreas-kidney transplantation, along with related disease diagnosis, treatment, teaching, and research. It collaborates with the Department of Nephrology and the Department of Urology to establish the Guangdong Provincial Institute of Nephrology, and with the Department of Urology to form the Guangdong Provincial Key Clinical Specialty of Urology. It also undertakes the standardized residency training program of Southern Medical University, as well as the teaching and training of undergraduates, international students, and graduate students. The department boasts strong technical expertise and has achieved remarkable results in clinical care, teaching, and research, ranking among the top in the province and the country.
